I need to get a eye exam done.
Can any body recommend a place where you get good value for money in the west end of GTA.

Years ago, I just went to somewhere handy/cheap. Bad idea. I was given a scrip that was not quite right. Spent big bucks on new lenses and frames. A friend strongly suggested that I go to the Vision Institute at York Mills and Yonge. They did all kinds of tests, gave me a perfect srip, but more importantly found the begining of a detached retina. I would never go anywhere else.

Alex52, if you're diabetic, your eye test is covered by OHIP.

Beyond that, I cannot help.

Try calling UofT School of Optometry or the College of Optometry of Ontario in Toronto and ask them about their programs services.

Optometrist is not the same as an opthamologist. Only opthamamologists can operate on cataracts etc. and prescribe drops for glaucoma.

I pay about $100 for a typical exam.

Thanks to McGuinty for de-listing this once covered by OHIP service.

Why cheap out on an eye exam? I mean vision is pretty important and you may have to spend good coin on a set of glasses so why not make sure you get the best test done by the best staff?

That's not to say there is no such thing as good cheap service.

I can appreciate having to work on a bduget. I'd just rather cut corners in expenses not related to health and well being.

I just had an eye exam and found out that the dollar store reader glasses have been bang on for my prescription. Essentially, you try on different stregths 1, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75. 2.0 2.25, 2.50, 2.75 etc and read small print until it is perfectly in focus. As for distance reading I don't know if this type of prescription is available self serve. As frankcastle says though why cheap out on something as important as your eyesight. An eye exam looks at the overall health of your eyes including testing for glaucoma.

Spending more doesn't ensure better testing, you need to find an individual who takes the time to do it properly. It's also up to you to accurately relay what you're seeing on the chart.

And your point is? Unless you have a pre-existing condition, you're starting off at an optometrist. If either they or your physician identify an issue then you'll get a referral to an ophthalmologist.

its your freaking eye... nothing can replace it. Don't be so stingy and go find a better doctor who might cost you a little more. They'll spend more time testing your eye and checking for any eye diseases that could blind you. I think all Wall Mart does is put your face against a machine and test the power your eye glasses need. That is all. And believe me when I say you could go blind if there is a disease in your eye that is not detected on time. A family member who never used glasses all his life started to have vision problem recently. One would thing it was just effects of old age. There was a bigger problem it seems. Blood vessels in the eye were starting to rip. Had this not been detected early or by a keen eye doctor, it wouldn't led to permanent blindness. The eye doctor sent him to a eye surgeon immediately and after consultation with other doctors, agreed that he had to had eye surgery right away. Obviously we're all hoping that never happens to any one of us but hey... an eye surgery is worth it if it means you don't lose your vision and can get it back to how it was initially.

I once went to a cheap eye doctor... All he cared about was running his practice like a production line.. At the end of the checkup, I realized he says the same thing to all his cliengs. "Go talk to my reception. She'll give you more details about the checkup and options." And what did the reception tell all the patients? "The doctor found out that your eye has so-and-so disability. You'll need to do eye exercises to realign it. We sell the software for the eye exercises and it'll cost you $400 blah blah". Stupid doctor even ended up giving me a wrong prescription power. I saw things blurry with one eye and decided to go back and tell him. Any doctor would try to find the problem and admit any mistakes. But this guy came up with some ridiculous reason as to why I was seeing like that and it wasn't the prescription that was the problem. He sent me away and even had the guts to charge me for that visit by saying it was not his fault so I had to pay for the session like a regular visit again. I wanted to fucking report him and his practice but fuck.. can't be bothered.

This is the doctor located above Market Village if any of you ever decides to go visit him.

Wow ... I have to say, quite disappointed with some of the comments here. As LKD said, ITS YOUR EYES!!!! who on earth would ever think about "cheap" with something that can not be replaced. Terrible idea. What makes it worse is that you are commenting on a site for hobby play. Meaning that you have the cash to HOBBY BUT NOT FOR YOUR EYES!!!!!. Come now peoples, reality check time. In order of importance 1) HEALTH and everything else is a distant Second to Last. Wow.
the worse your vision, the easier it is to find a woman that you like

I did that also. Got a pair for $10 at my drug store and now I can read small print perfectly.
