It did happen in Ottawa last month, and the band said they wouldn't never use that stage company again. I am not certain it's the same company and the Indiana disaster appears to be an act of mother nature.

Regardless it's incredibly tragic.

Gravity is wonderful when it is the only force acting upon a structure. The fact is that the weight above the stage in the lighting and sound systems is tremendous and also catches the wind, and can easily "collapse". Too much artistry, not enough science.

A little X bracing goes a long way.

I always marvel when I see elevated decks constructed all over the place with little or no lateral capabilities. Guys figure that you just put in posts attached to brackets set in concrete and frame the top and you're good to go. Not quite. First good gust of wind and she's going right over if the circumstances are right. Unless you build a proper moment frame to resist the lateral loads, you need to X brace.

Absolutely.

All structures must be designed to resist lateral loads. The loads must be properly transfered to the ground.

There are 4 ways.

1. Moment Frame (Everything is welded together to form fixed connections)
2. Braced frame (X bracing directs lateral loads to the ground
3. Rigid Core (such as sky scrapers which have a rigid concrete core - the floors are connected to the core)
4. Membranes (a variation on X bracing - such as you see in residential houseing with exterior plywood sheathing)

The stages simply are not properly engineered. Often lay people cannot get their heads around lateral loading and how the must be countered. Hence my deck analogy - which I see everywhere. Simple pinned connections with no bracing of any sort because the fools building them have no concept of the need for bracing. Ditto when I see guys taking the back off of structural brick houses (old houses) and just stick framing an addition onto the back of the house. No no no.

Yes, the MBNA stage collapsed the last night of Bluefest in Ottawa. Cheap Trick had just finished playing I Want You To Want Me and had the time and forsight to get off the stage. The wind came straight down the Ottawa River from Renfrew with surprising speed and intensity. Another stage collapsed a few days later that was connected to this particular stage company. I don't remember the name of the company or where it was, out west I think. And you are correct, it's the 3rd collapse of the season that I have heard about.
