India loses contact with its lander as it attempted to land on the moon

India says Vikram is sending data and are trying to determine what happened. NASA reports over the years lunar landings have a 60% success rate. Just as Israel's attempt failed recently, this is not uncommon. India did intentionally crash a probe on the moon in 2008, this was their first attempt at a lunar soft landing. There was a rover inside Vikram which was to explore the moon's south pole area for water and other useful minerals which could be used in constructing a space port on the moon.

Personally I think all the space related activity going on is pretty exciting. This is likely to be looked back at as the golden age of earth's space exploration. The private partnering with NASA and other nations around the globe to develop new technologies and exploration is pretty amazing. Lot's more going on then is largely reported. I'm geeking out over this stuff! Too bad I will likely be dead before we land on Mars or elsewhere...........

Space X is going to do it in the next 10 years by landing humans on mars. The moon for them will be by 2024 with humans landing provided nasa does not get there before. NASA's lunar plan is a two-stage approach: landing on the moon by 2024 and establishing a sustained base on and in orbit by 2028.

It’s exciting that all these countries and private companies are competing since there is all this potential.

I wonder what kind of politics will govern the moon and who will own what or is it first come first take lol. Regardless the next 6 years will answer these questions.

I sure hope they didn't shit on the moon like they do on the streets.

Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) found the wreckage of Indian spacecraft on Earth's satellite. The reason for the unsuccessful landing of the Vikram probe on the moon was the sharp deceleration at the second stage of the descent.

This can't be good for their insurance premiums on lunar vehicles.
