A Roman Catholic organization is asking married couples to pray together before they have sex – and is offering guidelines to help them get it right.
The Catholic Truth Society, a prominent British church group, has published the Prayer Book for Spouses to help spouses show their love for God before showing their love for each other.
The pre-sex prayer, tucked amid others about engagement and caring for children, is designed to banish any selfish or hedonistic motivation for copulation, The Daily Mail reports.
The Prayer Before Making Love was penned for couples to “purify their intentions” before hitting the sack, according to the handbook.
“Place within us love that truly gives, tenderness that truly unites, self-offering that tells the truth and does not deceive,” couples are to recite. “Clothe us in our true dignity and take to yourself our shared aspirations, for your glory, for ever and ever.”
The 64-page book hit the market Aug. 21 and is the church's effort to hold firm to family values at a time when they seem most threatened, clergy say.
“It is important for the church to affirm the value of marriage and family life and I suppose this is a particular way of doing that,” the Rt. Rev. Paul Hendricks, who is the Auxiliary Bishop of Southwark, told the British newspaper.
