Hi all,

I don't post much on this forum, seeing as I'm not too active in the hobby. However, I have run into some trouble and am out of ideas as to who to ask, so I'm here. Hopefully this post isn't out of line or breaking any rules.

I need to find a good lawyer or firm for 3 charges. I'm not sure how to find the best possible lawyer. Should I just go into the yellow pages and choose one that looks good? I would ask people for a reference but I don't really know anyone that I can trust with this. Any help is much appreciated...send me a PM if you feel uncomfortable posting here.

the law society of upper canada has a referral service.

Also seriously, go to donut shops near court, trust me, lawyers and their numbers find their numbers around there.

If you know someone in jail, they always know the dirty lawyers numbers.

It would help if you gave us an idea of the types of charges. Lawyers are a dime a dozen. You want the "best possible" lawyer. Best for what?

If you want to pm me with more info, and where you live, I can find some quality referrals for you.

You will also want to consider what exactly you mean by "trustworthy": do you mean a lawyer who will do whatever you ask him/her to do, regardless of his obligations to the Law Society and to Justice? A lawyer who will pull every dirty trick in the book to let a guilty man go free? Or one who will help you find the best route through the legal system and any consequences associated with the charges you face?

I do not have much dealings with lawyers, do not get a bad one. Go by their previous track record. I have heard horror stories of lawyers padding the bill, putting their interest ahead of yours. Making deals to screw the client so that they can get a better deal on another case.

There are things you have to be aware of. First, summary conviction charges are going to be more minor and probably less involved to defend than more serious charges. So if you are facing minor charges, you do not have to be as concerned about getting the "best".

Second, you want to make sure you don't hire a "dumptruck". A dt is a lawyer who runs a super hi volume business which he handles by dealing EVERYBODY out to the Crown as quickly as possible. While not every charge is defensible and a good plea bargain can be in the accused's best interest, you want someone who will take you and your business seriously and consider how you can be defended, even if it means taking the case to trial.

Most experienced criminal lawyers of the non dumptruck variety can fight trials with reasonable competence. You do not need Clay Ruby, Eddie Greenspan or Jack Pinkofsky on a small bank fraud charge and those guys would charge you the earth and pass you to a junior while they themselves did headline murder trials.

Call the Law Society at 416-947-3300 and ask to be put thru to the Lawyer Referral Service. For a $6.00 charge you get to talk to 3 lawyers free for up to 30 minutes and this might give you an idea of the range of opinions and styles and who you might like.

For obvious reasons, you do not want a bright eyed young guy who graduated law school 11 months ago. Neither do you want a guy who is so old, he will forget what you are charged with as he stands up to talk to the judge.

Does she have 2 hour minimum?
As if. Pay her $30,000.00 or so up front and that might cover half her work on the case. If it doesn't get complicated.

Hmmm.... You might want to ask the guy what % of his cases he deals out and how many cases he carries at the same time. EVen if you don't get a straight answer, you might get a vibe from the way he reacts.

It's tough for clients. Lawyers know all the inside dope on each other, but outsiders not, I guess.

First off, I am incredibly surprised by the support on here. Thank you so much to everyone here!

To clarify some things, I am facing charges of driving while prohibited and personation to avoid arrest. I don't want to get too much into details, but I think there are a number of points on which the case may be fought and I am looking to get a competent lawyer whos not a "dumptruck" as Oagre described. I have an appointment with one of the firms someone recommended here tommorow, but I would feel a bit better if I could get some more opinions. Again, thanks in advance.
