She had something old and something new, but this bride did not expect to be wearing handcuffs with her wedding dress.

Moments after her marriage ceremony, the Portuguese woman was arrested for attempting to illegally procure a passport for her new husband – a Nigerian immigrant.

The allegedly sham wedding, in Dulwich South London, was discovered by immigration officials after the couple left the church in separate cars  .

The bride was apprehended with a different man after their number plate was caught on police surveillance cameras.

Searches lifted the lid on the alleged scam and yielded fake passports and two further arrests.

The 37-year-old Nigerian husband is still in custody and faces deportation. The bride has been bailed to appear in court later this month.

Couples who are legitimate and seem so rarely have problems with the immigration authorities. But it is this sort of scam that causes the horror stories of "they asked about the colour of the bathroom curtains and what side of the bed I slept on."
