As 4th competitor in Canadian telecom market, Wind Mobile is unable to participate
in the 700 MHz auction. It is sad for Wind, the Amsterdam-based VimpelCom. Wireless
costs are down 20% in markets where Wind operates and it has snagged 675,000 customers
with its lower rates. Wind confirmed that it will continue to build itself as a strong competitor and
to be a vital influence on mobile market.
Three giants Telus, Rogers, and Bell are in the running for 700 MHz.
Feenix, a start-up backed by Mobilicity founder, regional player like Eastlink, SaskTel, Bragg, Novus and Videotron
are on the list of participants.
700MHz is better than current 1700MHz and higher. In general with spectrum, the lower the number, the easier it is able to
pass through objects without losing the signal, such as elevators, basements and parking garages. And 700 band is cheaper because it can transmit data over longer distances requiring fewer towers. It is not faster-it is just penetrates objects better.
After all, spectrum auction won't include foreign bidders. :-(
