When I list my places, I just put a sign out front and post it on craigslist. I get a far better response than on any other advertising outlet and it's free.
If I was looking to rent, I'd walk around the area I want and look for signs as well as check craigslist. Also put out the word you're looking, someone might know of a reasonably priced vacancy.
