BOSTON, Massachusetts (CNN) -- A Canadian national whose family has ties to Osama bin Laden was indicted Wednesday on charges he procured weapons for al Qaeda to use in attacking Americans and U.S. property in Afghanistan, federal prosecutors said.

Abdullah Khadr, 24, was arrested in Canada on December 17 and has been in custody awaiting extradition to the United States since then, said a written statement from Michael J. Sullivan, U.S. attorney for Massachusetts.

A federal grand jury indicted him on four charges Wednesday: conspiracy to murder a U.S. national outside the United States; conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction against U.S. nationals and U.S. property overseas; possession of a destructive device to advance a crime of violence; and conspiracy to possess a destructive device to advance a crime of violence.

If convicted on all charges, he could be sentenced to life plus 30 years in prison, plus a $1 million fine.

Khadr's father, Ahmed Said Khadr, was a "trusted associate" of bin Laden, Sullivan said in the statement. The Khadr family visited bin Laden and his family at their compound in Pakistan in 1997 and 1998, the statement said, and lived there for about a month in 1998.

Sullivan said that in 2003, an al Qaeda-influenced shura council -- a group of male local leaders -- gave Ahmed Said Khadr the responsibility of organizing attacks against U.S. and coalition forces near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. The United States sent troops to Afghanistan after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Khadr asked his son to help him procure munitions for those attacks, according to the prosecutor.

To that end, prosecutors said, Abdullah Khadr bought rocket-propelled grenades, rockets and mortar rounds between May and October of 2003, and distributed those munitions to others for use by al Qaeda and other foreign fighters against the United States.

Prosecutors said he also provided explosive components to others for use in those attacks.

Ahmed Said Khadr was killed by Pakistani forces in October 2003, Sullivan said.

But his son continued his efforts to procure munitions, Sullivan said, and in October 2004 negotiated to buy missiles from a Pakistani conspirator, which he intended to sell to another conspirator for attacks against the United States.

Why is the Canadian justice and legal system ILLEGALLY colluding with the ILLEGAL Bush war on the "people who have done nothing wrong"?
