Ikea's new bed shares name with German obscenity

Ikea has apologised after accidentally naming a child's bunk bed after an obscene German expression.

The Swedish firm didn't realise the problem until after the £110 bed went on sale across Europe.

The wooden bed is called the "Gutvik" which means "Good f***" in German.

But the Swedish firm's adverts for the bed were hastily withdrawn from windows and papers after it was pointed out to bosses what the words meant in German.

IKEA spokesman Sabine Nold, 40, said: "Yes, we do have a bed of this name that is on offer in our stores at the moment.

"It is the name of a tiny Swedish town. We did not realise that it could also be taken as something obscene."

She says the 10,000 articles in the IKEA catalogue have the same names the world over and occasionally a word might have a different meaning in a different language.

Funny how certain words in foreign languages can be misinterpreted. Reminds me of a story a friend recounted. He was travelling in Europe one time when he suffered a serious case of the bends. Running to the drug store, he encountered some hapless American tourist trying to buy a tooth brush. The poor girl behind the counter looked awrfully inimidated for some strange reason and by the time my friend went over to see what was happening, the girl had run off to get the owner of the store. In no time at all, he had the poor tourist in a headlock and was about to pummel the stuffing out of the guy.

To make a long story short, the guy was using a hand motion of brushing his teeth while saying brush, over and over. Well, in that particular land, broche (which was how it was interpreted) meant blow job. You can imagine what was going through that poor girl's mind... lol

they had to change the name since it's a kids bed, but they now know what to rename their king size mattresses.

Oh, I missed that part...read it too quick. However, if the management is smart enough, they could potentially turn it into a great marketing gimmick for the full size versions.
