If you had to dispatch a family pet, how would you do it?

This pet is very very old and terminally ill. The obvious thing to do is to take it to a vet and have it "put to sleep", but the practical side of me says it's a lot of money when I could do it myself.

Hopefully when your time is up, your family won't think the same as you.

really ? i hope they do, who really wants to be old, feeble and useless. most people have out lived their usefulness by 80. send them on their way to the clearing at the end of the path.

while the vet is the most humane way to do it, there are lots of other ways to get it done. no point in going to details but i would suggest the vet then you can have a proper funeral after and show the animal off in a proper way.

A massive overdose of opiates. The problem is that while the vet has legal access to them do you?

Go to the Veternarian.

It is NOT a lot of money. (not for a hobbyist anyway)

Most Vets will come to your house for a reletively small fee. No stress for the pet at all.

Didn't they shoot old yeller? Sounds inhumane to many city folk I'm sure, but if done right, seems like a stress-free way to deal with a reality of pet ownership. That's PET ownership. Presumably most people acknowledge the difference between pets and humans??

Anyhow, its probably illegal, but a pleasant drive up north and all that.

Bring a shovel.

Put the doggie in the garage, fire up the lawn mower with about 1/2 liter of gas in the tank... check back in about 3 hours by opening the garage door with the automatic opener and let it vent for about 20 minutes before entering.. remove and bury your deceased pet. You can also use co2 is you can obtain dry ice....first I would get the dog some sleeping pills to knock it out so it does not suffer any anxiety.

I don't even consider myself an 'animal lover' and I'm shocked (and perhaps learning something new).

a practical way would be putting in in a double garbage bag so that blood would not drip on the floor and whacking it over the head with a baseball bat
if you do it a few times it also counts as an exercise - doesn't get more practical than that

Lately, I'm kind of off of the whole pet thing. I grew up in a family that had dogs and still remember them fondly. If you can't see a pet decently all the way through to the end of their life you shouldn't have had one in the first place.
