If women like Romantic films and Romantic Novels so much, why don't they watch porn?

Hey guys,

So this is a "paradox" of life. Porn watchers are often stereotyped as nerds who play video games. However, I have noticed most guys don't watch Romantic Films or Romantic Novels. Most guys stick to action films and Science Fiction. If you delve deeper into novels, you'll see many novel genres are "dominated" by women. For instance, even in fantasy, there's a genre of Romantic Fantasy. Much of the fiction world is female-centered.

In theory, you might say, "Romance has nothing to do with porn." However, if you take some time to go through some of these novels and films, most of them have tons of kissing, touching, make-outs, foreplay. So the actual "sex act" is not shown, but even then sometimes they'll show "passionate make outs" when the characters take off their clothes. Sometimes they'll also have scenes where the characters are naked in bed talking. There's even films or novels where the female character breaks up with her current BF, meets up with her ex, hooks up with a random guy, then gets in a relationship with another guy. While they don't show it on screen, by the end of the movie, she has had sex with 4 different men.

What I am trying to get at is that romance, Erotic films (which also have a main female audience) tend to be the closest to porn out of all the film genres. A lot of other film genres that are popular with men will have female "eye candy," like a model who will show up at a car race. But most of the time the focus is on the actions of men fighting against other men or trying to achieve some goals like being the best at video games. etc.

Which leads me back to question, wouldn't it make sense for women to watch porn?

I've come across many women who watch porn and some are into certain porn genres even like hentai. I'd say women who lean a bit towards the right perhaps won't watch porn or as much. Most SPs probably do watch porn. Most porn is also fake and the acting itself is dull. A few amateur stuff is good or it's an actual hubby and wife doing scenes together being independent making good money. Most women generally prefer the amateur stuff since it's typically real than fake. It's generally a wife who loves her hubby and has no issue expressing it for video along with trying to sell it.

Men in general due to testosterone I'd say lean towards action and such where as women tend to be more emotional. I personally dig drama with a solid storyline, but I've watched most genres of film since I dig art. The romance novels/movies tend to have a storyline that attracts females and typically all you'll see is ass/tits on the screen and nothing more as the rest is assumed. Porn leans towards just showing the actual act without involving much emotion/drama/thought. It's a similar comparison to people who now watch 30 sec or less clips than sitting through a show or movie cause they lack the attention span. Most women probably also like a meaningful storyline that comes off intelligent because the length of the novel/show/movie took time to create, edit, etc. A 20mins or less porn video hardly compares to a well thought storyline. Lazy folks or those with low attention spans can't stand watching longer things cause they probably find it boring. Most people or guys probably don't sit and watch a full length porn. They probably get to a few scenes and jerk it off quick and are done.

I've watched Scarface, Die Hard, Scream, The Notebook, Remember Me, Mean Girls, Batman, etc. Personally sticking with mostly one genre gets extremely dull. I've also watched stuff in my teen years like on Showcase such as Red Shoe Diaries which was softcore porn and women generally would enjoy that too where as most guys would probably be like hurry up and get to the good part. Same thing with some action films where guys or girls get annoyed thinking hurrying up and get to the good parts than all that talking. To me that talking and what not is a lot better. John Wick 1-3 I enjoyed where as 4 was way too much violence going on hardly without a solid storyline. I'm one of the few who enjoyed Batman Begins where as most people liked the other 2 more cause the first one was mostly about a drama storyline. 2 and 3 were good too along with the action, but the storyline played out well.

You can compare a Homer Simpson kinda mindset where some men/women out there who prefer porn over a lengthy movie or at least stuff similar to romance where dialogue, emotion and drama come into play. A lot of it like you said is stereotypes mixed in with uneducated folks. I enjoy Trailer Park Boys and South Park cause it's well written comedy, but I also enjoy films of David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick, etc. I've also talked to guys who I had as friends who cringe if other men don't stick with "manly" things only aka the alpha male types I suppose. They got no issue calling a guy like me a pussy for watching The Notebook and enjoying it. I on the other hand don't give two shits. I also don't got an issue moving down to America and popping someone legally who comes on my property and doesn't leave if I tell them a few times. And there are women out there who I've met that generally prefer the alpha male types or guys who even stick to hardcore rap for example cause they think the other men are just straight weak. And I have met the odd few ladies who think like that and they come off extremely annoying. One actually worked with cancerous materials at a blue collar job and would call other workers names because they wore PPE dealing with the material and she thought she was all macho not using PPE with cancerous material. No offence or anything, but when she's on her death bed before reaching 45 or so and other people she worked with who perhaps live to 70 or more get the last laugh.

La la land
I was told this by a woman she she asked a female psychologist.
I have no opinion on the response.

Women have wet or humid real dreams, with the men they want. Men don't.
Men have fantasy visions in their mind with any women or the women they want? but not real wet dreams.

I still have to research this.

Men are very visual. Women cannnot get instantly turned on. There must be a story. It is much more complicated. It is more about the total package.
You know, the tall guy with status who looks good in jeans and in a suit. Humour as a sign of intelligence. Etc. Etc.

There's no drama in porn.

Two or more people get down to business and it's a wrap. Straight-forward. Simple.

Women interpret drama as adventure. It's beyond exciting and stimulating to them.

Romance novels are filled with drama (i.e. what men interpret as absolute bullshit, hence their distaste and boredom for the genre).

If you're old enough to remember TV Soap Operas, they're the closest thing to on-screen version of romance novels.

While women do watch porn, studies consistently show that they do so less frequently than men. According Pornhub, men make up roughly 70% of their audience, while women account for about 30%. Interestingly, many women report watching adult content with a partner rather than alone, often as part of shared intimacy or curiosity, though solo consumption does occur. Regional trends also show surprising patterns: women in more isolated areas, such as Montana and Alaska, tend to view porn more frequently than their women in large urban centers. This could reflect fewer social outlets, increased privacy, or different cultural dynamics around sexuality. When it comes to content preferences, women tend to gravitate toward emotionally engaging or narrative-driven genres. Romance-themed erotica ranks as the number one interest among female viewers, reflecting a preference for connection and storyline. Detective mysteries or thrillers also rank highly, suggesting a desire for mental stimulation alongside the sensual. These trends highlight that while women's engagement with porn may differ in frequency and form, their interest is diverse, and shaped by context.

There is no drama or storytelling in porn today like there was in the early 1980s. Back then, porn films had actual budgets, often ranging from $500,000 to $750,000, allowing for full scripts, sets and experienced actors. These productions were profitable, every film made back its money many times over. Today, the landscape has completely shifted. Budgets are minimal to non-existent, and there’s no investment in story or character development. Anyone who walks through the door, regardless of experience or age, is often cast without much consideration. It’s likely that producers dangle offers like $500 per short scene, or "loop," with the promise of a 25-loop contract—on the condition they pass some kind of initiation. But most don’t make it past the first or second loop before being replaced by the next hopeful. The result is a churn-and-burn industry with little room for artistry, storytelling, or even basic professionalism.

Some good random notes here. In general I disagree with this a generally true, but probably true for certain segments of the population. One issue with women is social conformity - they pretend not to like porn because they are not supposed too - this applies to both sexes of course considering there social group. Step fantasy porn, milf, Sex worker porn etc where all secret likes just two decades ago - not socially acceptable for both sexes.
Story lines can be very advanced, and that is independent of length. A good commercial can carry a complex story - much harder too do in a short time frame than a longer one. That being said, you can get away with other things in short formats, so if you are going to to forget plot, most wont watch past a certain point.
As for romance, some of that is porn with a new label. 50 shades if true to the book would have been a porn, but they went soft porn instead - not that there was not a market, the book is graphic, but the embarrassment to see an X rated movie in a theater is outside culture norms for women. But again it has to be label romance regardless. Men sweat women glow.

Most women in general wouldn't wanna walk into a movie theater seeing actual porn with others around them especially a bunch of mental health men around them jerking it off. It's a very small group of women who that wouldn't bother no different than some SPs who aren't into 3 sums or GB. And like I said most lean towards amateur stuff cause it's real than all that fake stuff. Amateur generally leaning towards a couple who's into one another than even amateur pornstars. I barely watch that stuff now and mostly real amateur when in the mood. The porn industry isn't like what it use to be and after watching a few good documentaries on it a few years back it hardly appeals to me. The few times I watched stuff together with a partner we'd enjoy actual amateur than pornstars. Not all SPs dig PSE, but most clients probably want that. The sad part is most guys in their 20s now and such don't have a clue how to make love to a partner cause porn has distorted things.
