I have visited recently, not to view active volcanoes.
Place is hauntingly beautiful to visit, but I would not want to live there.
Plus cost of living is way high being in the middle of almost nowhere.
Although their mastery of geothermal heat sources for a bunch of their energy needs is very cool.

Toxic elements would crystalize out onto the vegetation.
Then any animals eating the vegetation get ill and sometimes die from this
We visited some areas where the lava is less than a thousand years old.
Not even lichens have started to grow on it yet.
