I was ambushed by a Girl Guide

I came home after work, and shortly thereafter, the doorbell rang. I looked out the front window, and there was a little girl with glasses standing outside.

I opened the door and it she showed me a box of Girl Guide cookies and asked it I wanted to buy them. I had been ambushed because she was in ordinary street clothes and was taken by surprise!

I felt compelled to buy a box for $5.00. I felt slightly manipulated, because if I didn't by the cookies, it would make me feel like a jerk.

That organization has quite the racket going. When they set up outside the grocery store, they really rake in the cash. Meanwhile, the Boy Scouts have to scrounge for empties on bottle drives and try and sell apples that nobody wants.

I believe the cookies they sell are made by Dare. Similar kinds of cookies you can buy at a store for $2.

I've bought handful over the years.

Got to say at least GGs are trying to raise money by selling you something. Better than a typical beggar on the street holding out his hand.

I've never been one to give beggars money, but the times I have done it, were guys playing instruments in subway corridors and such. At least they are trying to do something to earn a buck.

Well, I absolutely want to ensure you that you’re not coming across as a jerk at all.

Was she not in her uniform perhaps because it’s still pretty cold outside?

Scouts troops are supposed to find ways to make their own money, it’s intentional that they don’t have a program like the Girl Guides. It’s a policy to churn out entrepreneurs. The apples are more about humility and charity than sales, unlike the GG cookies.

I think it's great that you can get a kid to go door to door selling cookies to raise funds for a very worthwhile organization.

Jesus jumped up Christ, she's just a little girl trying to raise money to support the girl guide organization. Babbling on about if you can buy the cookies for less in a grocery store. Really?

It's a noble cause, so give the kid a break and help support girl guides.

Cheap people suck.

You hit a trigger! The other day I overhear a woman talking with her daughter, who I will peg at about 12-14 yrs of age. They are discussing how to manipulate the "boy next door" into using his car to assist the little girl. It was quite a sophisticated conversation, with the little girl making multiple references to her sexuality. Jesus! When I was a teenager I had no idea what I was up against! Nor do I think most young men do, even at a much later age. We are lambs going to slaughter.

She's my top sales lady. I don't dictate her methods.
She targets lonely old men, dresses provocatively, and shows off her assets during the demo.
You're upset because you were expecting a Hoover demo and instead you just got a tease.

At least your carpet is clean.

Classic girl guide scene from Curb Your Enthusiasm. Later in the episode, Larry ends up reneging when they try to deliver the cookies...

I have no problem saying no to door to door kids when I'm not interested. The thing that bugs me is when the boss, clients, or even coworkers want to sell for their kids. Especially with the first two, there is no way to say no and they know it.

As long as they aren't hounding you late in the evening like the Rogers salespeople, they aren't asking for a large sum of money and as someone mentioned, at least you are getting something versus beggars or other fundraisers where you just donate money. When you see the same person standing on the same corner for years, you shake your head.

As for the work thing, I think of it as tit-for-tat. At some point I might be looking to raise funds for a charity run/bike ride or selling goods for a family member. So I give knowing I will receive when the tables are turned.

Now if they were hounding you for $50, that's a lot...

In the last week, I have received 2 "charity" invites from organisations which have a connection to the company I work with. I won't get into details about that.

But both were $1,000.00 per ticket (for charities of course).

I'm sorry, but that's just over the top.

Needless to say, neither I nor anyone I work with will be going to that event.
