Would a place like Zellers or Best Buy give me cash back, or would they just put the amount on another gift card? Thanks in advance.

They will give you a "like kind exchange", meaning that your refund will be in the same form as your payment. This is especially true if they are a chain and have automated POS (cash registers) machines. It is their way of ensuring that money meant to be spent in their stores actually DOES get spent in their stores, one way or the other.

You might be able to scam them by saying you got it as a gift and don't have the receipt. Many will just give you a store credit but if you press the issue you might pressure them into giving you a refund but that is unlikely. It would depend on how good of an actor you are....

If you bitch and moan enough and to the right people (ie. store manager) you could possibly get them to refund the gift card for cash. All POS systems will be set up to do that function. Most, if not all will need a manager security clearance to be able to access those POS functions. A more likely result would be a cheque mailed to you for the amount of the refund which would take approx. 2 to 4 weeks. Typically though, the refund of a purchase is done on the same media that was originally used. I can speak fairly confidently about this as it is the industry I work in.

You could sell it on ebay; they've got a whole section listing giftcards of various stores for sale. Depending on how popular the store is, you can get a good percentage of the face value of the card.....I got 85% of my Home Depot card.

Doing laps at the Y
Market Place had a story a couple of weeks back about giftcard scams. Someone got one as a wedding gift, yet had no intentions of buying anything at Home Depot. Seems that they didn't want to give into CBC's request for an outright cash refund. The problem is these companies think it's their money, when it actually belonged to the person giving the giftcard in the first place.

Go to customer service and scream.
