.......thread about the possibility of Raising the Speed Limits on some portions of Ontario's Hyws?

I suggest In some locations the current 100km/h could be raised to between 180-200km/h....weather permiting.
I would suggest that absolute maximums could be reduced in rain, snow and fog.
I would suggest that in some places Ont's secondary Hyws the speed could be raised to 110km/h.

What say you?

I think the problem with setting speed limits is that while most people can handle them, there are those who are incompitent or abusive. Thinkn of the billions of miles of driving done each year and the few fools who cause the "accidents". If everyone drove conscientiously, we wouldn't need limits at all.

I have one simple rule when driving...pass or get over.

I would say it is not going to happen. The only way would be to have
flexible speed limits, via electronic signs, that could be set remotely
according to weather conditions.

Even then, the most one could expect would be something like 130 km/hr,
which I believe is what Germany now has limited virtually all it's autobahns to.

I say its a krazy idea! Gaurantee you will see more deaths and carnage on the highways as a consequence. Some of these will be people who are innocently driving along and die because someone made a tiny small mistake while going 200 km/hr.

What I like to see is trucks contained to the far right lane, and only allowed left lanes when they have to pass.
And enforce the damn law, please!!

Nothing irritates me more than some 20-wheeler doing 140 kmh in the fast lane with shit, dirt and other crap falling off his truck

Most of the 401 was originally designed for a speed limit of about 120 KPH (70mph) at teh time. It was reduced during the first gasoline crisis in the 70's as a fuel conservation measure.

Raising the speed limits of the 400 series highways to 120 KPH is doable they are designed for it( sightlines breeaking distances etc) . The secondary roads are not designed for anything above 80kph if you raised the speed limit to 110 or so you would have sigght lines that would not allow you suffiecient breaking distance.

That is the engineering aspec. The stupid people aspect makes it a very difficult thing to do. If you raise the limit the idiote will juist go that much faster above the limit and kill that many more unfortunate bystanders.

There is also the factor to consider, that for most hour traffic, the section of
the 401 and QEW between Hamilton, oshawa and Milton, speed limits are of
no significance.

First of all it's the passing lane....not the fast lane. I hate people who call it that since those are the idiots who sit in it the entire time they are driving. It's meant for passing, that's it.

So you want to put trucks into the lane of oncoming and exiting traffic..yeah that's well thought out. Let's make it impossible to get on and off of the freeway. Trucks are supposed to stay in the middle land unless passing....not the right lane.....and since governors are now the law in Ontario trucks cant go faster than 105km/h

What's the rush?

There are so many amateurish drivers out there and with technology and other disruptions I am going to have some clown behind me driving at over 180 km/h? It's obvious you don't know anyone that has dies in a traffic accident related to speed. I guess you have also forgotten about our beloved children in the world.

Grow up man and if you want to avoid traffic then leave a few minutes earlier.

How does leaving trucks in the far right lane interfere with oncoming and exiting traffic???

I can see how well trucks are abiding to 105 kmh

My wish would be that the limit on highways like the 401, 400,404, etc be raised to 120, but that the limit be enforced.
Everyone knows now that you're pretty safe going up to 120 almost all the time, except if you happen upon a cop who just decides to clamp down and pulls you over for doing 118.
It's the whole uncertain grey area that I don't like.
Whatever our views and wishes, I'm not sure that TERB is the best or most effective forum to present these views. On the other hand, who knows how many LE officers and decision making politicians read this board regularly?

Would allowing speeds over the current restrictions reduce the number of speeding tickets and in turn reduce the $ income from these tickets? I say yes and therefore will not happen.

Although there are many vehicles on the road that can hit the 180 mark I am sure there are just as many that would fall to pieces as if imitating re-entry from orbit. This obviously would be hazardous.

Ummm... Vast majority of on/off ramps are on the right. Big lengthy trucks on the right lane limits available space for a car to merge onto or to get off highway, meaning they're now slowing to a crawl in the middle lane... accidents and road rage ensue.
Yes but you have just as many cars in the middle lane that wanna exit also.
And if the trucks kept the speed limit they'd be easy to get around on, even in the far right lane

Your logic astounds me.

Car's do not exit from a middle lane, that why it is called a middle lane...as "in the middle between the left(passing) lane and the right (on/of) lane). Aside from a few left lane exits (Allen Expressway on ramp) they are all on the right. That is that way highway/freeways have been engineered.

Also...trucks now must have speed governors on them to drive in Ontario. So Trucks do keep the speed limit. It'd be nice if cars did.

That's a better question...if the average speed limit on most highways in North America is 100-110km, why is it that cars are given a top speed or 180-200km. Wouldn't it eliminate some of the problems if cars were made not to go that fast?

Yep...biggest dislike about Canada for me..the way too low of speed limits. And my cars stick right out since I have no license plate in front. (In Michigan you only have one plate and it goes in back..very cool indeed).

You know why its not going to happen / the amount of tickets would go down..tickets are like a tax-but only certain people pay it.

120 km/h is about right...the USA raise their speed limits on freeways years ago..traffic goes SLOWER when there is traffic since most cars are going about the same speeds there is less gaps for speeders to zip in and out of.

What's your rush? My gosh speed limits at 100km/h...why not reduce 'em to 50, or better yet 25...or ever still get a horse!

As I asked in the +50km/over thread...why is 100 kmh so sacred?

Why am I a clown? I have things to do...just like you.
Yes i know people who died in traffic accidents...Accidents will happen.
I am TRYING to Have a grown up argument. to me driving is not some 30 km a day commute...with a Tim Hortens Breakfast sandwich in my fat hand.
Its 1500-2000 km a week...through out the country.
If you are not skilled enough...Then get training OR get off the Highway.
