I Know Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction, But...

...Has anybody here ever considered writing a book set in the world of hobbying?
I'm not talking about a memoir, though some of the stranger real-life experiences shared here would make for an entertaining read, no doubt. I'm talking about the exploits of a fictional hobbyist as he navigates the waters of sex-for-hire while interacting with fellow enthusiasts on a fictional forum. I have to be honest: I've been toying with the idea...
There's a stigma surrounding this lifestyle; sex is pretty taboo to begin with, but throw money into the equation and suddenly people are in an uproar. Most folks can't get past their own prejudices long enough to see that there's a community to be found here, with its own intricate protocol and unique ettiquette, and an ecclectic blend of personalities. Hell, it even has its own slang! It's a fascinating world, and it deserves to be explored.
I'm not looking to make the ins and outs of hobbying (no pun intended) the focus. Rather, this life, with all its trappings, would serve as a backdrop for a particular protagonist, whom we follow from one encounter to another, as he searches for something, I know not what...
His experiences would be fictional, though I might choose to draw on some of the stranger moments in my own history to round things out. I would touch on those pitfalls with which all hobbyists have had to contend (i.e. the scams, the poor service, the ever-present threat of disease), but I wouldn't plunder this board for specific material. Moreover, I wouldn't transplant the TERB to this fictional world and slap a new name on it. It would serve as a template, nothing more. I'd tweak the format to accomodate the plot and setting, and even come up with my own language.
The whole thing's embryonic now, but I wouldn't feel comfortable proceeding before getting some input from the TERB collective. This all might be moot, anyway; the sad truth is that most of my ideas get filed away with the intention that someday, when I have more time and money, I'll dust them all off again and write till my heart's content. Still, I'd like to know what you all think. Let me know, okay...?

If you get to write it, I'll buy the Goddamn book... could prove very entertaining...

Like the life of a newcommer starting to discover Strip clubs, still a little shy, then becomes a regular, moves on to MP's, discovers Terb, becomes a member, tries out the SP scene, likes it...posts reviews... then becomes a moderator :p ...etc etc

I'm sure I could identify myself to such a guy... (except the Mod part which I leave for Sheik)....

Go for it!

I think it's a good idea. And I'd have no problem with a disguised TERB making an appearance in the book. ("It had only been an hour since she had left, but already he had started to feel a gnawing emptiness. Sighing, he signed on to ERB; maybe a quick cruise through The Lounge would lighten things up.")

Anyhow, as with any book you must first focus on your story. What are you going to write about? Is your narrative going to be a small portion of this guy's life as he moves from SP encounter to SP encounter? Or is there something else to your story?

I look forward to reading your tale Sinestro.

Hey, xarir...

You're right about the importance of a strong story. I'm not interested in just stringing together a bunch of pornographic vignettes, forgoing depth and narrative flow. I've got nothing against porn, you understand. I'd just rather keep it as a hobby.
I've already got the plot and some of the characters sketched out in broad strokes. The main character's motivation is still a bit nebulous, though; I'm having some trouble working out the details of the final scene in which everything is wrapped up. Call me obsessive compulsive, but I like to start with the end of a story and work my way back.
I know that I don't want to engage in a love-vs.-sex debate. I don't want the protagonist to wise up, turn his back on hobbying and settle down with a nice wholesome virgin. It'd amount to an indictment of this lifestyle, and make a hypocrite of me. Conversely, I don't want this story to be a celebration of hobbying, either.
I guess the message I'm trying to convey is this: this life is neither inherently good, nor inherently bad. The only baggage, the only issues, the only damage to be found here is whatever we bring with us. It is neither wound nor balm. It just is. And it'll continue on, the give and the take, oblivious to our presence or absence.
...
That's actually not bad; I think I'll use that. Damn...now I'm getting kind of excited about this whole thing. Excuse me, won't you folks? I've got some writing to do! First, though, a little porn (for research, you understand)...
