Most still rely on: CCleaner, Ad-Aware 2007 and Spybot Search & Destroy. They are free and do a decent job. There are a few others out there.

Ad-aware and search and destroy. Keep running them over and over and over until they stop reporting problems...

also stop using limewire... it installs more spyware than you can shake a stick at...

I'll second that...in that order too.
You always want to run CCleaner first..a couple of times...then run the other 2.

There is another program you can run that is free and you won't have any worries about spyware, malware, viruses, or any other nasty stuff being put on your PC. It's called Linux. I run Ubuntu and it's pretty nice not having to run any of them scans anymore, along with defragging the drive. Besides Ubuntu there are dozens of other linux distros to choose from and they are all free and most come fully loaded with all the programs and apps you need. I didn't find it that difficult to learn another OS. For a short time I thought about getting a Mac but found Mac cost even more than a PC. Since linux is free I gave it a try and I'm glad I did. It runs lean and fast and is even more stable than a Mac, plus you can hit all those risky suspect sites without any fears of something bad happening to your PC.

If interested, http://distrowatch.com is a good link for info on all the linux distros.

www.ubuntu.com for the latest on Ubuntu.
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition (Hardy Heron) has officially been released.

Never use RegSeeker

Although it is well reviewed in places, never, ever, use Regseeker from these guys: http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm

Although I had it backup the registry first, I was doomed. The tool destroyed the registry and made a backup that wouldn't restore no matter what I did.

I am about to recover what I can and reformat this weekend.

Ad-aware and Search and Destroy aren`t to be relied on. Have a look here: https://terb.cc/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=183034

spyware

I've used Webroot Spysweeper w/ avg free for many years and never
had a problem .

But they say you should have more that 1 anti-spyware so I also manually
run spybot from time to time and Windows Defender.

As you can see there are varying opinions.

My 2 cents is that no one program is available to do it all.

I always use the free ones and they protect me as well, if not better than the expensive ones.

I use: AVG antivirus free edition. AVG antispyware free. Spybot Search and destroy free. Adaware free edition and Spyblaster free.

Consider as well that its where you go and what you download that is the real problem. PORN, Free Music, Gambling, Screen Savers, Kazzaaaaaaahhhhh!!!!, file sharing, etc as well as sites offering cracks and hot programs. These places are where your computer picks up the crap that will eventually kill it.

I have some clients who have no virus or adware programs and their systems are clean because all they do is send and receive a couple emails a week.

Um, how many times must we post the same info?

When someone asks in the other sections about info, we kindly or bluntly refer him to the search feature. Same should apply here.

Charlie, please do a search for spyware or adware in this section, we've covered this topic many times.

As many times as it takes to get the right message out there. Look at some of the previously posted info and see that about 75% of it is totally unreliable.

Just my opinion.

I have used all the free stuff for years without any real problems. I use AVG, Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy and run CCleaner a couple times a day.
