....I hear ALOT of that in Canada. I am an American and I travel to Canada twice a month. I am used to it and it doesn't bother me. What bothers me most is a trend towards not trying to be tolerant of each other. Personally, I try to be courteous to Canadians because it's just the right thing to do. I have a lot of Canadian friends. I am sure Americans are just as bad. I hope we both start to trying harder to understand each other and like each other. Can't get any closer than Canada and the US.

I hear it a lot too and cringe when it's directed at visitors or immigrants to Toronto.
Even if people don't like American policies, can't they see that many Americans feel the same way?
People should realize this rudeness reflects badly on themselves.

I have many American friends, I spend a lot of time with them and they love Canada.

The Americans that I know and have known for decades are proud of their country but they are not the incessant flag waving, freedom stating, might is right idiots that tend to make up the disparaging stereotype of which Canadians have grown skeptical.

I am not religious, many of my American friends are Born Again Christians. Apparently there are varying degrees of this faith (lol) but all of them are beautiful people that I would wish as friends to any person on this earth.

I love many Americans and America. Please do not misinterpret distaste for US foreign policy and manifest destiny as anti American.

I, like you, have through travels, met people that I could not bear. Their ability to wrap themselves and their opinions around whatever flag of ignorance in sad.

Good point. I have to neighbors on either side of me and I realized it's a hell of a lot better to be a good neighbor rather than looking for reasons to piss them off. It just makes life easier and more enjoyable!!!

its not you, its me.

Nothing I dislike more then being on vacations with Americans. Sorry, its the "we are better then everyone" mentality that comes through from you guys. I know that you are brought up thinking that, so I understand when I'm at home, but when i'm in Mexico, or elsewhere your not better. I thought as you brought it up, I would open up to you. maybe it helps, maybe it hurts. but its in the open. thats a start. I've got my 1812 Musket gun at the ready just in case.

And I see that too. I don't think Americans realize how much we effect other countries. We need to realize that.

there has been recently in this country over the past few years a real rise in a level of snobbery that this country is so much better than the Americans, anti Americanism what was once a project of the pseduo intellectual left in places like York University, is now very common amongst a large number of Canadians, like oh we are so much better than them, their culture sucks they are so uneducated, oh really at least they have different facets of their culture available here, if someone wants to watch Jerry Springer or Fox News than its there, what do we have oh the great CBC, more Corrie, Don Cherry please. As for being uneducated, Yale, Harvard, Princeton and more Nobel Prize winners than any other country, need I say more.

ok diatribe over :D

This is something I would really like to believe. However, based on my admittedly limited experience the majority of Americans do not feel that way at all. Maybe it's a false impression, but I don't think I'm the only one.

There's an easy way to get around it. Just say: "I'm American but I voted Democrat."

Like most people here, I am not anti-American (citizen), just anti-government of the USA whose only interest is enforcing its owns views and policies unilaterly on the rest of the world.

But one thing I don't understand is if most American citizens can see thru the bullshit of GWB, how can he get elected again. I can understand his first term was won (stolen) via the court system and not the voters wishes. But the fact that he won the 2nd term makes one wonder if majority of the Americans are in favour of his policies and will not hold him accountable.

Damn, the whole country wanted to impeach Clinton because he got a BBBJ from Monica, but Bush can do a million real things wrong and get away with it! Btw - I don't condone Clinton's beahviour, but his record was a bit better.

Just pondering, ummm.

Like many here, I don't like the American Government, but I have nothing against the American people.

I think that part of the view that Canadians have against Americans stems from the fact that we just don't want our culture to be the same as the U.S. culture.

Ask a Canadian what they identify as their culture and they will say the don't know, but they are definately not American. I think its a natural reaction to being in close proximity to the dominante country in the world.

I hate brocolli.

I believe 1/2 of the people that say "I don't like Americans" are envious and the other 1/2" are uneducated.

There are just as many things to hate about Canadians as there are of many other nationalities in the world.

Jeff247, next time you hear someone say that, ask them WHY. I am sure you will find that the answer to your question is almost ridiculous.

BTW- I am Molson oooops Canadian. :D

I like Americans just fine.

Just don't give me "the attitude" or I will give it right back to you. It's only common courtesy.

The thing with some Canadians is is that they are anti-American without realizing that they are being hateful towards a select group of people. I would bet that some of the anti-American lefties running around Toronto would be appauled if you said, "I hate Pakis", but if you said, "I hate Americans", they would nod in silent agreement with a smirk.

That's just crap in my eyes.

Though I must admit I have no use for GWB (mainly because he's a dummy), I certainly wouldn't hold it against any American I came across.

As an American who is married to a Canadian and who has lived here for more than two decades, I understand why Canadians feel the way that they do. When I first came here, I was informed (repeatedly) that Americans didn't know anything about Canada -- but over time, I began to realize that neither Canadians nor Americans knew that much about each other, or even about themselves, for that matter.

But at the root of a lot of anti-American sentiment, I believe, are consistent policies by the US government to favour big beefy industry lobbies over trade agreements with the US. Another thing that contributes to it is the way that Canada (and Mexico) is conveniently blamed for so much of the US's security troubles. God forbid anyone should ever point to US foreign policy (going back decades, both Democrat and Republican administrations). I AM American -- but since I live on this side of the border, even I'm sick and tired of this nonsense. Reality doesn't seem to matter -- all that seems to matter to Americans (even some educated Americans in high places) is the belief that anything American is somehow better than anything else. As though the world consists of Americans and wannabe-Americans.

I think the US would be better and stronger if it would lose this ridiculous mentality.

Did anybody catch that hilarious article in the Globe & Mail this weekend about Hollywood's often egregiously erroneous take on Canada?

..c..

My mother used to say, "You can't make them like you, but you can make yourself more likeable. Stop complaining about them, and start fixing stuff you can change in yourself."
