Yah, the wheel locking system - hate them.
A few years go by, and if a cart is left outside in the winter, the battery voltage drops, and the brakes stay on whether they are inside the free wheeling zone or not.
Then a bit more time goes by and the battery brake intermittently bites when inside the store. Of course no maintenance available by the store owner - they need the oem service co to come in to do it.
Last time an in store wheel lock up happened to me, I had a mostly full cart and two aisles to go.
i went to the front of the cart and started dragging the cart.
This had the locked up back wheel squealing away as I start pulling my way down the last two aisles, leaving a big black streak on the concrete floor from the rubber on the locked wheel every inch I moved it.
The manager came by after a stock boy hussled away after he peeked down the aisle I was in and saw what I was doing,.
He had a little RF wand tool in his hand to unlock it. waved it beside the locking wheel and wiggled the cart back and forth. It unlocked.
That worked for about 10', then wheel locked up again.
I then said to the manager that I would keep dragging it leaving the mark on the floor, or they can load my items to another cart , or they can move it with a pallet and pallet jack, to the check out and then load my items onto the belt.
But I reminded the guy that I got into this state using Your cart in Your store.
I then asked how often do you get your batteries serviced?
The manager talking to me said he did not know that they needed to periodically have the batteries changed out for new batteries.
He and a couple of stockers started to get the pallet jack organised and I proceeded to shopped the last two aisles into the cart from a hand basket I grabbed.
I now, after that circus choose to shop elsewhere.
