I can't use TERB at work - is there a way around this?

Calling all internet experts - how is my employer blocking terb when I try to access it from work? Is there some filter in place that explicitly says "exclude https://terb.cc" or how does it work? Or should I just get a new job? ;-)

I just can`t bring myself to ask the sys admins why this won`t wor for me. I don`t think they`ll understand why I need it.

Surf with care...

Will the above block his employer from knowing though that he is visiting TERB or other adult sites?

If they have an adult site blocker then they may have also set up a warning system that lets them know when there any attempts even to get log in to an adult site. At my work they recently did exactly that. Not only does it block everyone (I am an exception since I work in the adult market) but it gives you a pop-up warning when you try to access and it also alerts the IT Dept that you tried to access an adult site. Beware.

Is it really worth your job to look at Terb at work?

Obviously your company has stuff in place to prevent you going where they don't want. Likely they have ways of monitering it too.

Buddy of mine had a great job. But one day he was bored and started surfing some of the anime sites. By the next week he was out of work for violating the company's rules on computer use. Now he's scrambling to find jobs that will pay enough to keep the roof over his family.

Just my 2cents worth.

Yep, most big offices install an http proxy server that cuts bandwidth by caching pages from frequently-used sites. The next step after that is to block access to gaming sites and porn sites and anything else that isn't work-related. At my office and my friend's office, the proxy wound up being run by snoopy, powertripping geeks. You can't win, don't even try. Everything gets logged.

I use a workaround. I opened a unix shell account on a free public server. I use Putty to ssh in, then I run links, which is a pretty good text-mode browser. Hypothetically, the admins at the unix site might be monitoring me, but the worst they could do would be to hack my TERB account.

As long as my management doesn't start recording screenshots from my PC, I should be safe.

That vtunnel site also looks promising. I'll check it out.

Ummmm....

...don't you think if they are blocking it they rather you not be looking at it - and are probably tracking your attempts?

And - BTW - they probably block the URLs for all of those "access" sites as well. IT people are not stupid.

I know my client (essentially my employer since I use their PC / Network / etc.) blocks A LOT of web pages, and sends you a little note every time you try to access anything they deem "inappropriate". I get caught at least once a day with pretty innocous stuff (for example, they block any site that you can download files from to reduce virus exposure). I sure as hell would not be checking out TERB on their network...

Just let it go...you can log on from home...or, heaven forbid...move on to a new "hobby"...

...like this too. had a pretty tough time explaining to new employers what happened at his old job (because they sure as shit weren't going to provide ANY sort of positve reference).

How the fuck do you live with yourself knowing that the reason your kids can't have Christmas this year is because you couldn't fucking stay off of porn at work???

Thanks for all the info. Actually I'm not trying to view porn, I'm just want to access some threads on the board. Believe it or not, some of the stuff posted here comes in handy at work (well, not work per se, but some of the social aspects at work - recent example: url's related to the world cup). Some other boards I belong to work fine at work (but TERB is my favourite!).

So is there something with the terb URL that triggers the filter? Or does the filter scan the content for words that might tip it off that it's inappropriate (eg. "escort").

I've set off the trigger a few times over the years and managed to keep my job and yes, I certainly don't want to put it in jeopardy. Sounds like I should not bother to trick the filter but I am curious as to how they work.

Websites are constantly being crawled by bots and the website content categorized - the search engines like Google and Yahoo are just a simple example. Undoubtedly TERB was long ago on security firms' "adult" list - your company obviously has subscribed to one of these and is running web usage monitoring tools.

I would act like my boss was reading directly over my shoulder everytime I opened a new webpage from now on if I were you. The network admins I've spoken too all have their favourite stories of being asked to pull up someone's surfing history and then hearing said individual now has been provided the opportunity of infinite freedom to explain being fired, with cause.

As one said before. Companies have a proxy server that monitors activities on the internet. If they wanted to block employees from access certain sites, all they need to do is block the ip address or the http. I can tell you this, every site that we go to through company's internet gets recorded on a server and they can compile reports on how often you visit that site and how much time you spend there. There's no way around it unless you know someone in IT and login with their admin passwords to delete your logs.

Well given that the full name of TERB is "The Escort Review Board", I suspect that's why the site is blocked.

I guess if access to the threads for "social aspects at work" is important enough you could ask the IT dept. to allow parts of Terb through (ie the General Area). I wouldn't risk my job over the world cup, but I've noticed many soccer fans aren't exactly rational <grin>

Get a wireless browser, ie blackberry, Palm.... Sure it costs more, but you're safe. You can also turn off the images and it would be much cheaper.
