I am shocked, saddened, and aghast that no one has yet mentioned that on today's date

I think we as a society are losing our sense of compassion when so many historic world events go unremembered and unremarked every day. The list even includes Jimi Hendrix opening for The Monkees!! What music fan amongst us would not say that that should top the list of calamatious events.

I think everyone reading this should take a moment to look themselves in the eye (preferably in a mirror) and ask why you don't remember and mention such important events every day.

Here is the list for today's date. Read it and shed a tear. I hope that someone other than Blackrock and Rockslinger will step forward to shame the masses into remembering these and other all important dates in the future. I am certain they will bring to my attention any events not mentioned on this list.

And don't you dare forget that tomorrow is Nelson Mandela's Birthday!!!

Leporid, The 1917 information has some difficulties: prior to the Royal Proclamation it was not the House of Hanover (that ended with Queen Victoria*) rather the House of Saxe-Coburg und Gotha. Also they missed what might arguably be the most important event on this date the murder of the Russian Imperial Family in the Ipatiev House in Ekaterinburg.**

* Although continued in a junior male line in Hanover itself.
** This is tangentially mentioned under 1998

how hard is it to understand that society as a whole has a short attention span. they only care about what the current headline says.

While some people may think this was an important day in history, the truth is both Hogan and Flair were already past their prime when they competed for the WCW Championship in 1994. Also, if I remember correctly, there was a lot of outside interference in that match.

As for the Monkees, I thought the more significant event was the day that David Jones changed his name to David Bowie, so people wouldn't confuse him with the Monkees singer.

Quite impressive, considering there were only a little more than 5 billion people world-wide back then. I had no idea so many television sets existed!
It does sound a little excessive, even if there were that many TV sets, not all of them would have been interested in watching.

Another interesting fact is that South Africa did not have television service until 1975, as the governemt was worried about the effect it would have on the non white population.

The breaking point had come during the moon landing in 1969 when Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the moon in 1969, South Africa was one of the few countries unable to watch the event live.

Sorry, but sports and entertainment milestones are somewhat trivial, and can hardly be characterized as "historic".

Listing "1996 230 people die when TWA 800 crashes outside of New York City" and "1996 Yank John Weteland blows save after record 24 consecutive saves" together on the same page is one thing if it's simply "things that happened on this date", but to equate the two of them as historical events is, IMHO, an insult to those whose lives were lost and those whose lives were forever changed by the tragedy of that airplane crash.

There are many events that happen every day - some blessed, some tragic, many mundane. I believe the use of the word "historic" needs to be applied more selectively.

When I include the statement: "What music fan amongst us would not say that that should top the list of calamatious events", perhaps you could tell the post was supposed to be tongue in cheek, exactly for the reason you repeat above. It was aimed at certain posters who seem to have the need to over dramatize their thread titles to get views.

Could you not bring up Arnulf III the Hapless becomes earl of Flanders again. Some things are just too painful, just too soon. Like joking about the Holocaust, Justin Beiber's career or the Killing Fields.
