I am traveling to Hawaii with my personal trainer for ten days of bliss! Other than a meditation retreat and us taking a yoga course we have an open schedule. We are staying in three different areas; two different parts of Honolulu and Kauai. I am looking for suggestions for the two of us to do while we are there. We are more into the healthy lifestyle so night life isn't really what we are seeking. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks,

Jillian

Hike up to the top of Diamond Head. Take a bottle of water. The view is nice.
Rent a car & go to the north shore. Great beaches to see. Have lunch at Turtle Bay Resort. Go into the Dole Plantation on your way by to get a Dole Whip. The town of Haleiwa on the way to the north shore is neat. Some eclectic shops.
There was a work out trail in Kapialani Park. Thats past the Zoo just outside Waikiki.
Friday night go down to the beach & watch the fire works from the Hilton. Theres a good place to watch just outside the Outrigger Waikiki Shore. On the pier there.

Try to get over to Lan'ai and spend a night or two at Manele Bay. Insanely cool resort and awesome scuba in a protected area. http://www.fourseasons.com/manelebay/

I also liked Molokai. Not very touristy.

Some of the stuff on volcanoes was cool but obviously the attraction is the beaches. honolulu beaches not that greta, other side of that island has amazing beaches.

The best thing about Hawaii (any island) is that you can rent a Jeep and drive around the outer shore. Sooner or later you'll find a quiet beach. Just hop out and you'll be in paradise.

Many years ago, I was making my way up to the North Shore on Oahu when I saw a neat little inlet. I crawled over some rocks and parked the Jeep. I put on my snorkel gear and just sat in the water. It was like sitting in an aquarium. The fish were simply stunning.

Stay on the east side of Oahu. The locals live on the west; it can get a little rough for tourists there.

Kauai is spectacular.

On the north-west coast there is amazing hiking - coming from the south western part of the island, drive north to the end of the road and hike out to the cliffs and back (Nualolo - Awaawapuhi Trail Loop: http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=35719). On the northern part of the island (Haena), drive west to the end of the road and hit the beaches (beautiful) as well as the Kalalau Trail - the first few miles is easy and leads to a beautiful, secluded beach. Enjoy :)

My fondest memories are of the beaches - excellent snorkelling, fantastic variety of colourful fish to see and swim with.
I also enjoyed the helicopter tour on Kauai very much.
If you are a golfer, be prepared to play in the windiest conditions possible, even if it's a nice day. It's just the nature of paying out in the middle of the ocean.

Agree with the Dole Plantation. :) There's also a zoo in Honolulu - not as big as ours but nice. Definitely do a luau if you can! Pearl Harbour too.

I did the luau at the Royal Hawaiian and thought it was overrated. The food is meh. It's really more about the entertainment. If you're interested in the culture or have older kids, I'd suggest doing the Polynesian Cultural centre. They have a bigger and more kickass luau. (I found the local women to be, um, too starchy, but the mixed Japanese girls were WOW!)

Strongly recommend stopping at Giovanni's shrimp truck on the way up and grabbing a plate of the butter garlic shrimp. Yum.

Have fun and get lei-ed.

Consider a day trip to the big island. You can book a tour. They pick you up at your hotel & take care of everything. Get a pamphlet when your walking along Kalakaua Ave. or book your own flight & car rental. Fly to Hilo drive to volcano national park. On the way to the park stop at the southern most winery in the USA.

Go to one of the Slack-Key guitar concerts at the community center in Hanalei Bay on Kauai - if meditation & yoga are your thing then slack-key will be right up your alley. The music that the guy (Doug McMaster) can make with a single guitar are incredible.
