When that Pearl Fishers duet came out, the birth rate spiked. Kaufmann and Hvorostovsky, are/were studs. Kaufman has made the difficult jump from Helgentenor to Tenore Dramatico. Someone had to full the void left by Pavarotti.
I do not quite see why that would be a difficult jump. In voice terms, I think rather it would be a step back.
Kaufman most likely wanted a wider audience and more cash and adulation.
