NEW YORK, April 10 (UPI) -- Artie Lange, a regular on Howard Stern's U.S. radio show, quit after he and his assistant had a furious spat that moved from a studio hallway to the airwaves.

Newsday reported that Lange was heard arguing with his assistant, known as "Teddy Microphone," in a hallway, prompting Stern to call Teddy into the studio to talk about the dispute.

As the argument continued in the studio, Lange became enraged and went after Teddy. However, other people in the studio were able to defuse the physical confrontation, the newspaper said.

Stern told Lange his actions were unacceptable and Lange said he could not guarantee it wouldn't happen again. Lange then offered his resignation, which Stern accepted -- while telling Lange to take some time and calm down.

As he was leaving the studio Lange told Stern: "I'm not a good person ... I gotta leave ... I love you."

Stern and show producer Gary Dell'Abate admitted after the incident that they "did not know what to make of it all," Newsday said.

It is unclear whether Lange will be back, since Stern's show isn't live Fridays and the crew is on vacation next week.

No kidding. The dude's been in pretty bad shape since Beer League and not that he's led a clean life before... hope he doesn't pull a Chris Farley on us any time soon.

I don't know much about such things, but is that a serious coke addiction or what? He is really messed up. I don't listen to Stern myself, but it sure sounded real to me. I doubt it is a ratings grab. Now, whether Artie will be back is another issue entirely. But I agree with the previous poster, he needs to get a few things straightened out before he goes back there.

I love the Howard Stern show. It's too bad they took it off of q107. I guess they might have to bring back Jackie the joke man Martling.

No ratings to be had on Satellite radio. You never know with Howard. They often try to leave u hanging with something prior to a vacation week. It was wierd because early on in the show Howard said something like "you never know what can happen during the course of a day". Hopefully Artie doesnt kill himself in Amsterdam.

Um hasn't Artie "quit" a few times before? I remember this same kind of thing happening on YouTube, look it up if you guys don't believe me.

I think it's all bs and he'll be back soon, Artie overreacts.

...I almost expect to read that he has been found dead of an O/D... he is a funny guy, and it hurts me to see this happen. As for a publicity stunt/ratings grab I have never heard Robin so pissed and angry. maybe George Takei need to take him under his wing ( not that way either!!!)

Artie has a self-destructive personality. It's just that simple.

To think for some reason that that's about to stop of some reason... I doubt it. He hasn't expressed any real desire to cease the behaviour. In fact, he's expressed the opposite.

That fat fuck should just appreciate the fact that he hit the lottery by getting on the show and every day that he goes home to his new multi-million dollar Jersey shore mansion with the elevator, he should be kissing Stern's ass. There is no way he would've been getting his big money stand up appearance fees with the show. And when he leaves the show one day, those paydays will dry up too.
Simply look at the stellar career Jackie has had since leaving the show! :)

I think Artie is funnier than Jackie, but not by much. To throw it all away says a lot about how unhinged he has become. When I last saw him on Kimmel, I thought he looked drugged and enormous.

I think it was just a bit to keep the fans in suspense over the week off. (Maybe to throw people off the scent of Howard's secret wedding that might happen this week).

If it wasn't a bit, Howard is responsible for this mess. Teddy kept wanting to leave and end it but Howard kept him there and adding fuel to the fire and all week they have been gloating Artie. No real loss anyway. Time for someone new to try to add some life to this show.

I disagree about Artie's talent as a stand up comic, I caught one of his shows in NJ and he had me laughing continuously.

Unfortunately he has a looming dark side that he finds increasinly difficult to control, the failure of Beer League made the problem worse. George Takei's attempts to moderate his ugly edge are futile since Artie hasn't come to terms with the scope of his problem.

The fact that he is a bully is inescapable. Richard Christy was equally to blame for the confrontation between himself, Sal against Artie. And yet Artie chose to direct his rage against Sal - he's less likely to inflict physical pain on him.

His feud with High Pitch Mike stems from the fact that the falsetto reporter was the first to openly criticise Beer League, on the Wrap Up Show. Mike should have known better, he has neither the talent nor the daring to make a movie.

Rumours

A rumour from a "reliable" source. The same one that gave information that David Lee Roth would replace Stern on K Rock when he was leaving states that Artie will be suspended and the show will start auditioning other comediens in the interim.
