NEW YORK, April 10 (UPI) -- Artie Lange, a regular on Howard Stern's U.S. radio show, quit after he and his assistant had a furious spat that moved from a studio hallway to the airwaves.
Newsday reported that Lange was heard arguing with his assistant, known as "Teddy Microphone," in a hallway, prompting Stern to call Teddy into the studio to talk about the dispute.
As the argument continued in the studio, Lange became enraged and went after Teddy. However, other people in the studio were able to defuse the physical confrontation, the newspaper said.
Stern told Lange his actions were unacceptable and Lange said he could not guarantee it wouldn't happen again. Lange then offered his resignation, which Stern accepted -- while telling Lange to take some time and calm down.
As he was leaving the studio Lange told Stern: "I'm not a good person ... I gotta leave ... I love you."
Stern and show producer Gary Dell'Abate admitted after the incident that they "did not know what to make of it all," Newsday said.
It is unclear whether Lange will be back, since Stern's show isn't live Fridays and the crew is on vacation next week.
