How realistic is it to have people working and living in the same community?

It makes no sense when people like myself commute almost 2 hours a day to come to work. And, I see people living on the upper floors leaving the same building to go to work elsewhere in the city. LOL
There are efforts already to have employees working from home. But, wouldn't it be nice to have a large corporations to buid a community of houses where their employees can live and work nearby?
I could think of the benefits with energy savings plus life span lenghthen.

It's a good idea and one that I think a lot of tech giants are investigating.

The move toward working from home is also great. Mind you, many people tell me they would find it hard to get motivated to do work if they did so from the comfort of home. I've never understood that view because the motivation is paying the bills that keep the roof over your head and food in the fridge.

They are trying

Look at a the condos downtown. People who buy them work downtown. The $$$ they save goes into the condo

Subway lines also create condos that get people out of cars

I moved to where I work, I can now ride a bike to work or a 10 minute drive. A 2 hour commute would depress me no end

How about staggered work hours and 4 day weeks to ease rush hour?

Mid week days off instead of weekend?

Sleep units at work so you can put in long days then more days off?

You can't socially engineer this. Some want to live close. Some want a big yard. Some want waterview. Others close to amenities.

And at the rate people change jobs you never know where your workplace will be.

As long as your city planning ensures that commercial space can't be turned into residential(Toronto actually has this) then people and the market will decide.

It's good for some business to allow home work saves them money. Especially project oriented work.

Soon, the robots will work in your place. Then you won’t have to commute.

We called those company towns, back in the day. As soon as the workers earned enough money they bought cars so they could live somewhere else.

Tell us why you don't live where you can walk to your job, like in those olden days. But the real question that needs answering is why people choose to commute to work and drive everywhere to do everything they don't do at home, when it would be cheaper, and save lots of time to walk, bike or take some sort of transit. The older communities where that was the way of life still exist, but they've been abandoned for the 'burbs

Until they make the choice to live like that again, you won't have people living, working and shopping in the same communities.

I know lots of people who live and work and shop in their community. Not sure why anyone would drive 2 hrs to and back from work. You do have a choice where you live.Nobody to blame but yourself.

Plenty of places where it is possible. In fact it was part of the design process behind places like Liberty and Distillery (or going way back, Don Mills).

You mean Urban Development? Naw who needs that.

I heard Companies in foreign countries have gated communities for their workers. But in this economy here, be happy they give you a chair to sit in.
