I noticed it's one of the requirements for marines and apparently firemen have to do them as well. Curious how many pull-ups you guys can do, proper ones where you don't swing your legs around and with your actual chin over the bar. I see a lot of guys who don't go down all the way at the gym.

Currently I can do 18 weighing in at a stocky 210 lbs. 39 years old.

i have only seen 1 or 2 men do a pull-up over the last 5 years at gyms. most do a half-up. a pull-up from dead-hang is really tough. me? let's say 0 pull-ups.

Right now cus I hardly lift anymore I could do about 8 proper chin ups then wet noodle arm will set in.lol
A few years back when I was working out 5 days a week on back day I would do behind the back pull-ups (all the way until the bar hit my lower traps). I would tie a 25lb plate to my waist and do 4 sets of 10reps. I haaated it thats why my buddy made me do it. He always stressed for us to work on our weak points and our most feared exercises and that was mine by a long shot. I got him back tho for putting me through that reverse chin up hell by making him do preacher curls.lol

I do wide grip behind the back, and I can do ~16 until failure. 172 and 37 yrs. What is the difference between chin up and pullup?

pullup your palms face away from you (pronated), chinup they face you (supinated). chinups have a larger biceps assist. some cross-fitters use a large leg movement (kipping) for their own style of chins. so the op defined the pullup as proper ones where you don't swing your legs. doing it strict is much harder. and i doubt if anyone doing a pullup behind the neck is getting their chin "over the bar". There would have to be either a gap in the bar or their head!

Is the requirement that you can do a pull up or is there a number that depends on age and weight?

I think that age and weight aren't as important as overall fitness level here. I can do more now than I could in my 20's, but I was lazy and quite skinny then, with little muscle.

I am in my mid 60s, 150 lbs and I can still do 15-20 pull ups at a time with ease. I still do about 120 army push ups 5 days a week every morning and run up stairs 10-12 floors 4 days a week. I am not counting all the other push ups I did with the ladies 3-4 times a week. Age really is not a factor to me. You are only as old as you think you are.

Lately, I've been doing dead-hang pullups, for which I can do 10. These are harder since they are full range of motion. You won't see many guys doing these at your local gym
