Utilitarianism is dead. Political success today is measured not by the greatest good for the greatest amount of people but rather the ability to force feed the masses certain ideologies embraced by a political party. The contrast in the united states could not be more entrenched. On the left they have liberals who coddle the poor, the immigrants and the gender non conformists while on the right they have hard line religious capitalists who believe everyone should look after themselves. The success of either side depends on the ability to force the masses to adopt their own ideology weather they like it or not. The most effective way to do this is to get.voted into power. In 2024, 2,284,336 more American voters chose the right wing over the left which was a stark contrast of 2020 when the left wing voters outnumbered the right by 7,008,526. In both elections people were dissatisfied with the state of their country and voted to change leaders. The results of both elections were successful in giving their parties what they wanted. With Biden you had tremendous success implementing politicies which created jobs, ensured clean energy and acceptance of gay, bisexual and trans people, while Trump promotes a hard line on immigration, cuts to inclusive social programs and policies which adhere to Christian values and beliefs. Neither side is right neither side is wrong. What is apparent is that neither side is willing to give and inch and when in power both sides seem to shamelessly flaunt their power to the other side of the spectrum. It is this attitude which has caused perhaps the greatest political division in America since the Vietnam War. I am not sure what it will take or if it is even possible in the near futures for both sides to coexist peacefully and happily, but the current extremists have taken hold of both mainsteam parties with very little middle ground

On what planet is the current Democratic party under the control of "extremists"?

I don't know what that measure is. I imaging
both Trudeau and Trump should score very high
marks in that measure that would place them
near the top among the most successful. I think
roughly that measue could be quantified by something
like this:

popularity / (intellegience + knowledge + wisdom)
