How do I get rid of Messenger Service??

Ever since I switched from Windows 98 to Windows XP I have been bombarded with pop up messages in the middle of my screen from Messenger Service. It's driving me up the wall. Is there anyway to disable it through msconfig?? Why is this feature included in the XP software??? Annoying as hell. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I had a computer programing friend of mine write me up a program (ever so aptly names "f*ck messenger), it blocks all those annoying messenger pop ups. there are programs to download i am sure, or i could just send you a copy of the program if you'd like.
