Question 2: I get solicited by companies telling me they can guarantee me a good ranking - how do they get my ranking higher.

I know the basics that the more your linked, the more your clicked the higher your ranking.

Can I do this myself?

Question 3: Should I be paying somone to do this for me?

Is your site devoted to articles or products? That's a primary distinction when starting to SEO your site.

They can't assure you a good Google rank. Sites will routinely go from being in the top 10 to dropped from results for a specific search term regularly.

Most of these SEO companies (different than search engine submission, which is almost useless) will pay for traffic for you.

Anyway, best way to get a high Google rank for a specific term is to get a lot of incoming links to your site from high quality pages that are of similar content.

Here are the steps I'd recommend first:

1) Start a topic-related blog and link to your site from it
2) Contact other webmasters with similar sites and link to articles on their sites from your blog, and ask them to do the same when you have an article or page that they'd like their readers to visit
3) Ensure your pages are all properly designed, standards compliant and relevant.
