Holy fuck......that's a shocker. He seemed healthy enough the last time I saw him but that was at last year's barrett Jackson auction in AZ.

Wonder what he died from?

Edit: This one says due to complications from surgery. I believe he had heart surgery before, maybe he needed it again?

A great man who created great cars! I really enjoyed American Hot Rod. He will be missed.
I stopped watching the show because it was like the business I used to be in: always short deadlines.

I remember one episode where they were rushing around like crazy building this yellow mustang for yet another customer with more money than brains. He wanted the thing done for his wife for a birthday present.

Now I know it could be months between taping and airing, but the series on the mustang finished in august then in January I saw the car go up for auction at barrett jackson. What a waste......

I enjoyed the first few seasons of his show. He seems like a really diffcult guy to work for and took everything very personally (i.e. Chip Foose,..)

Anyway R.I.P.

Wonder why they don't want to disclose his cause of death. 63's not so old at all.
He made some amazing cars in the show, stopped watching after a while because of all the bickering...like all the other reality shows.
Did find it funny whenever his ex-wife and wife are in the same scene...

from what i've heard/read most of it was all setup. he had the cars made and then sold them at the barret jackson auction. because people could see how the car was made they got a bit more money for the cars.
I can see that being done but then, why the mad rush all the time? The late hours? The weekends? To create "drama"???

If so, no wonder guys were quitting all the time.....I know I would (and did quit a job that was involved constantly with short deadlines etc).

I used to watch his show and I was glad when each of his staff left him one by one. He looked like a real dick to work for.

Newsflash: Treating your employees like they're still working in the 1950's doesn't work anymore.

LOL yeah, really. When they were together I thought: man, this looks like one of those before and after ads for a plastic surgeon lol. Talk about trading up to a better model lol.

Makes for good TV.

What other conflict can they have.

A guy like that, if he has a guy come to him for a car, he says, it will be ready when it's ready. If you don't like it, fuck off, I've got 50 other people in line behind you.

Wonder if Chip Foose will make the funeral?

A statement by Foose on his website:

I was wondering that myself, there was some big animosity between them because chip went off on his own......

I remember on the show the wife saying something about how Boyd had a hate on for Chip. From what I gather chip worked for Boyd, learned the ropes, then went off on his own. I mean, how juvenile though: Chip went to school for automotive design, what did Boyd expect? Tenure?

LOL just thinking, I was watching overhaulin' once and chip was in the booth taping off a car. So the painter taps him on the shoulder and points to the booth window and there's boyd standing there. Chip just about jumped out of his skin lol. (it was a cardboard cutout lol).....

That was the first episode after Chip "stole" Boyd's painter... It was a playoff of the AHR episode where the painter got an offer with Chip and was feed up working with the deadlines with Boyd.

Chip worked for Boyd for a long time and was basically running the place. I believe that Boyd had recognized in Foose a major young talent and made him vice president etc. Basically, Foose was the brains, the designer, and was running the place. I'm sure that Foose learned a thing or two along the way working for Coddington, but the fact of the matter is that Foose is incredibly talented, way more so than Coddington. Foose was the quintessential boy genius.

Some of Coddington's best known cars - like Boydster I and Boydster II and Boyd Air were in fact designed by Foose, not Coddington. Foose is also very hands on (as can be seen in Overhaulin) as opposed to Coddington (whom I've never seen so much as grab a wrench.) As time went on, the student became the master and the master was in fact dependent on the student.

Like anyone with talent and desire, I'm sure that Foose got tired of making Coddington rich and said to himself, "I can do this for me" So he left. I'm sure it wasn't an easy decision as Foose "seems like" a pretty decent guy and Coddington was frankly a bit of a dictator.

When Foose left, half of the staff went with him and Coddington no doubt felt betrayed and he never forgave Foose. Foose had often stated that he was willing to be friends, but Coddington would have no part of it.

I had heard that he did go bankrupt, but like anything else, there's bankrupt and then there's broke and they can mean 2 different things.

I don't know when he went bankrupt, but I had heard that he stiffed a lot of people and he was at some car show and some guy beat the crap out of him whom he owed a lot of money and no-one did anything to help the Boydman out.
