Hello all.

I've recently been bitten by the horse racing bug and have enjoyed it immensely.

However, there is one thing I haven't figured out properly, and I'm hoping a few of you can help:

How do you calculate place and show winnings?

For example:

At the Queen's Plate I bet:

$10 Sterwins at 6-1 to show
$10 Malakov at 3-1 to show

Sterwins came in second paying $6.60 and $5.40
Malakov came in third paying $2.40

I made the bet online and the website does not break it down for me. Also the only explanations I can find on the net use a win as the example.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch.

what about exactor odds? how do you figire out the payout by looking at the odds. Theres been times when i play but the payout ends up being too low.

lets say the exactor you want to play is 6/5, 8.

very easy to calculate being a frequent visitor of woodbine.....

the payouts given are based on $ 2.00 bets. therefore when you bet $ 10 to show on sterwins and the payout is $5.40 x5 =27.00. You will cash back 27.00 for the show bet on sherwins. Net profit 17.00

for the $10 show bet on malakov which payed $2.40 for every $2.00 You will get back $2.40 x 5= 12.00. Net profit 2.00

Show bets meaning you win if your horse finishes either 1st, 2nd or 3rd
Place bets meaning you win if your horse finishes either 1st or 2nd

Show betting is usually very low risk and low return especially when you bet on favourites.

AsheBlonde,

The Win odds are totally irrelevant when you are betting the Place and Show pools. The Win odds are simply that --- the odds on the horse to win.

At Woodbine live Thoroughbred racing, the take-out or commission that the track takes on a Win, Place or Show bet is roughly 17%. That means for every $100 bet or handle as it is called, the track redistributes back to the bettors $83.00.

In a place pay-off, the 50% of the payoff (83%) goes to one of the 2 horses that come first or second and 50% to the other.

For show, 33.3% of (83%) is divided.

Using a simplified example...

Say there is $100.00 in the Place pool.

Of that $100.00, $10 is wagered on the #1 horse, $25 is wagered on the #3 horse.

That means the Place Payoff would be $8.30 on the #1 horse and $3.30 on the #3 horse.

If your betting on-line, you can actually see how much people are betting on each horse to place and show but you have to do your own calculations.

Thanks guys.

All this information gives me a clearer picture. Show betting may seem a bit boring (which it is) but I'm in it to have fun not lose my shirt.
