'The highest rates we've seen since the 1940s,' before antibiotics were introduced, specialist says
"Edmonton also has the highest rate per capita for methamphetamine use, according to a wastewater survey by Statistics Canada. The agency has been testing wastewater in five major cities since 2019."
I work for a really big design consultancy firm in the transportation division, planning roads and highways.
One of the things you do when you are planning a new bridge or dam or otherwise impacting a watercourse, is figure what the local fish are.
Their life cycle patterns can alter when certain construction activities can be done.
We have had jobs where artificial reefs and spawning grounds were created in a water course in advance of impacting existing natural ones.
Then the in water road work is delayed for a year so the fish can move to the new spot.
But you need to figure what fish are involved,
And they don't respond to surveys on their smart phones.
So a smart limnologist in our firm figured out rather than try to count the fish, 'just' filter the water, and sequence the genes in their waste to figure the fish species.
Then quantify said waste to indirectly figure how many fish in the spawning grounds.
Clients did a happy dance, saved them a ton of time and money and gave surer results.
And we now also have a fish gal with her PhD for the work

Always thought "Montezuma's Revenge was gastrointestinal in nature. True about where the syph came from, though...

There is actually considerable debate about where syphilis originated. There is some evidence that a less virulent form of the diease was present in Medieval Europe. That would suggest that the bacterium mutated around 1500 - either in Europe or America - to become the horrendous killer that terrorized Europe until the discovery of penicillin in the 1940's.
