I should have posted this earlier....
A few weeks ago I was leaving the Home Depot on Wicksteed (Eglinton/Laird) on my way back to work. While driving I noticed a man and a woman staggering down the street in the distance; as I approached they both fell to the ground. The man was waving for help so I pulled over. He asked for a ride to the hospital, my first thought was 'yeah right buddy' but once I got a better look at them I dialed 911.
They were both burned from head to toe. The woman was in much worse shape than the man was. Their skin was peeling off as if they had severe sunburns and their hair was singed. They both pleaded for water, luckily I had four bottles with me which they inhaled in seconds.
While observing them I noticed that the woman had a hole in the palm of her hand which revealed a bone at the base of her thumb. Her eyes were milky white and it was evident that she was blinded by the accident.
At this point I have no fucking idea what had happened and there were no signs of a fire or anything else for that matter. While I continued to wait for the ambulance a man came running over and asked if I had heard the explosion, which I hadn't. He took me over to a ground level electrical transformer. As it turns out the man and woman took a short-cut through the fenced in transformer and got zapped.
The minimum voltage that they experienced would have been 27,600 volts, it could have easily been 110,400 volts or more for that matter. That type of shock is the same as being microwaved. In my line of work I have witnessed and have heard of the results of such accidents, I'll spare you the details because sadly they both survived.
The man and myself made our way back to the victums and waited for the emergency crews to arrive. While we were waiting we asked how they managed to get out of the fenced in area??? THE GATE WASN'T LOCKED!!!
I went back after work and gave my report to the police who were there with Toronto Hydro doing an investigation.
The next day my neighbour told me that he read that the two homeless people were struck by lightning.
I feel like a total piece of shit right now for not acting sooner. If someone here has access to the news article please post the link I need to raise hell.
All I can think about is what if a little kid went in there to get his ball.
