GTA Chinese restaurant chain Ho-Lee-Chow has closed all of its locations after 20 years of business.

A message left for customers on the chain’s call centre voicemail thanks them for their loyal patronage.

This is the message left for customers:

To all our loyal and valued customers: We would like to thank you for 20 years of allowing us to serve you. It has been our pleasure. Due to circumstances beyond our control -- one of which is the poor economic climate -- another of which is a refusal to compromise on quality and service you've come to appreciate, Ho Lee Chow has closed down operations. We truly apologize for the inconvenience and thank you once again for your patronage.

Ho-Lee-Chow began business in 1989.

I was down the Beaches about 3 weeks ago and noticed that the location at Woodbine and Queen was closed.

They seemed OK whenever I ordered from them. The market for take out chinese is tough. Frankly, there are very few Chinese restaurants outside of Chinatown that I would ever bother with. Mandarin being about the only one I can think of. (Yes yes, I know, it's Mandarin, but I like it. It's fresh and good quality.)

The neighbourhood chinese places around where I live are frightening.

Up until a couple months ago, there used to be a Ho-Lee Chow near Mount Pleasant and Eglinton. Sad to see it go. They had nice chicken fried rice. On the other hand, their demise will save me some calories.

I used to order from them a lot maybe 150 time since day one, but lately the prices went up, the portions went down and the quality was hit and miss. The search went out and I found someone with a larger menu, delivered in half the time, and cost 30% less.

Ho-Lee-Chow was a "Mega chain"? How many locations did they have?

Looks like they had BIG TIME money problems (way to state the obvious CG), and chose to deal with it the sneaky way out. This is what's called a midnight run. Typical here today, gone tomorrow type closure... usually leaving suppliers, landlords, employee's and other unsecured creditors out in the cold...

The owners probably fled the country with all the $$$ they were able to drain from current bank accounts... :rolleyes:

Yes, I'm cynical... had it happen to me, many moons ago.

No regrets here.

The Newmarket locations changed ownership faster that cycleguy changes his underwear.

Food was good but service and ability to retain employees was terrible.
