Is it a would it be a good idea to get a burner cell phone for hobbying?
if yes, what is the best bang for buck?
For the 7/11 cell phones, do any of them come with data plan?

My personal method is a locked down phone, and a culture of privacy. No one uses my phone but me. My home is locked and the main browser I use to access Terb is also locked. So two passwords to get to my naughty stuff. Also things like setting my phone so certain emails only vibrate but don't show a notification on screen. Etc.

If you live with a spouse with whom you want to keep from finding out about your hobby - this method will fail eventually. Technology will fail, either through a bug, or unintended consequence of a software update / patch etc. As time passes you become more trustworthy of the technology until it fails.

If it's for privacy only and your lifestyle doesn't depend on someone never finding out, than using technology like this is a perfect solution. Otherwise, I full on recommend disposable hobby devices, and frequent recycling of them.

Why not consider a pay as you go sim card that you can swap into your existing phone? Much easier to hide, much easier to explain if found.

I use a phone/texting app. I download it each time I go to use....takes 2 minutes. Then uninstall when I am done. Again takes less then a minute. It remembers my number and password. If I am in a super hurry I simply log out of app. App requires email and password to get into.

Get a burner app like text free. There a bunch of other ones. I used to have a separate work phone but it was expensive and a waste.

Does a hobby phone really do you any good in the case of outcalls? You still have to text and/or otherwise reveal your name and home address to the SP, thus leaving a trail... just wondering.

Apps and sim cards can hide your trail to an extent, but all phones also broadcast a unique identifier that can be read through IMSI or stingray boxes, for instance.

Hobby phone paid in cash and airtime paid in cash are the most discreet.

(that said, if you're worried about the significant other primarily, its most likely not ever going to be an issue)
