How does the comedian make money if he posts it for free on You Tube - or does YT pay YOU a % if your video goes viral?

If YT sees that a particular video is getting tons of traffic, they contact the poster in order to obtain permission to advertise on his post.
Advertisers happily dish out in order to have millions of eyeballs watching their add while the original poster gets a % of the add money.
Thank you. Apparently, his song was also on the top billboard charts. If he has rights to it, he would make money from air play, license fees and straight download purchases. [He's a comedian and I guess he has an agent and/or a good entertainment lawyer].
