I bought a Canon HV20 last fall and love it. The only thing is I have trouble editing the content on my laptop. My laptop is a HP Pavillion dv9628nr with a AMD Turion 64x2 TL-58 processor. I have 2GB Ram with Vista...

Software
Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0
and the MS bundled Movie Maker, DVD Maker, etc...

Is this enough to do the job? I find Premiere is choppy when I do edit work and almost anything I do with HiDef content slows down everything on my computer...

If I upgrade to 4GB Ram, will I notice an improvement? Any other suggestions? My desktop with a 3.06 Ghz processor and XP handles the video much better (and that's on a 7 year old computer!)

any help would be greatly appreciated... Thx.

maybe try using nero 8.0 as your editing software instead? Your system is well above thier minimum systems requirements so hopefully the video won't be choppy and it says it can do high definition video. There is a free trial so cost is right too.

System requirements:

15 day trial:

look at the "convert and share" portion of this video to see if it does what you want with your hi-def content ie is avchd OK for your purposes?

HV20 is an amazing piece of hardware! It's so good that film industries use it as a disposable camera during scenes where the camera may be damaged! The new Sony Vegas works GREAT with it, almost natively. Adobe Premiere CS3 has some probs working with HD content. The CS4 version should fix that problem. I hope you have LOTS of drive space if you're working with a lot of footage. Find yourself a nice fast Quad Core processor. Vista sux! 32bit XP Vista or XP will only see 3GB of RAM.

thx guys... I've made it through my session yesterday without any real trouble. It actually went quite smooth and wasn't as slow as I expected. Also, once I let the software render the progress, there was no choppiness in the video editing.

yes, the HV20 is also used heavily in the porn industry for new HD content that requires camera space limitations, or like you say, when the scene risks damaging the equipment... a la peter north...

i'm gonna save some money and just get a powerful desktop built for editing... no need to get into the upgrade game with my laptop... it'll be out of date in quick time anyways...

21 Pro.

You got it. Using any video editing software like Adobe Premiere is going to drain you're computer resources, especially on a laptop. You will have to leave you're laptop alone for hours until it renders the video file you want.

I do suggest going to a Intel Quad Core Extreme system, with at least 8gb of ram and XP 64bit or Vista 64bit OS. It will cost a few extra dollars but in the end if you're going to be using it for heavy video "porn" editing..LOL I'm kidding, you will be amazed at the processing power and time you can spend doing other things. It may be a little overboard but in the end it will do more than enough as a personal workstation.

A few months ago, I dumped all our computer systems and bought all Intel Quad Core extreme 3.0 (http://infonec.com/site/main.php?module=detail&id=351984) processors. All top of the line hardware for the custom programming area of my business. It was a solid investment and it has already paid off with the improved quality and speed of work the machines has done.
