While being interviewed for Recode by Kara Swisher, the interviewer got two US congressmen confused.

When asked what she thought of Cory Booker saying that “we kick them in the shins” about how Democrats should respond to Republican election tactics, the former secretary of state corrected Ms Swisher by saying that it was Eric Holder.

Ms Swisher apologised and corrected herself only to have Mrs Clinton respond with what appeared to be a racist comment.

Mrs Clinton said: “Yeah. I know they all look alike.”

Ms Swisher was quick to respond by saying “No they don’t”, why the audience let out a gasp.

in 1996 she called black teenagers super predeotars when defending her Husband's Crime bill which leads to the mass incarceration of Black Americans

It's bad enough when people need pictures to recognize irony when they read it, but it used to be they could hear the special tone of voice that says, 'we all know, I mean the opposite'. The interviewer and the audience did, even if re-posters can't hear it. And isn't it ironic that the folks who deride Political Correctness the loudest are the ones to crow about out the supposed non-PC-ness of this quip?

Eventually we'll have to dumb down everything to suit them.

So I take it then you will now start taking Trump with a grain of salt?

Or do "words only matter" when he speaks.

When he makes even the teensiest effort to show he's speaking in jest, or ironically and doesn't mean the literal truth of his words, I'll do my best to give him the benefit of the doubt. But I may not be able to keep it up in this Forum, given the 'defenders' who clearly take his every word as pure gospel as they post their support.

Anyway, that's all hypothetical: He's never given the slightest indication he has a sense of humour, never mind any sense of irony.

Trump does have a sense of humour, the problem is - it’s stunted at grade school level. But that’s ok, as his base loves it.

They certainly love something, but it doesn't translate to the rest of us, who have to go by the words we read and hear.

+1 Clearly the audience got it.

I don't think Clinton intended it to be a racist comment. It was a flippant remark. Didn't make any sense either because Booker and Holder look nothing alike.
The problem as I see it is if Trump had said something like this he would be vilified by the media. See there's proof he's a racist/white supremacist.
Sad state of affairs we are living in today.

But you interpret remarks based upon what you know about the person making the remarks. IF Trump said the same thing then yes- he'd be vilified (as certain people are trying and failing to do with Clinton). But in Trump's case, he has a long history going back to his days managing rental apartments for his Dad. That's why so many white nationalists feel that Trump is their guy.

If you watch the video, you’ll see that before making her “They all look the same” remark, Clinton had just delivered a long-winded explanation of why “political correctness” is a good thing because it helps prevent people from being rude or offending one another. She then responded to the interviewer’s next comment with a politically incorrect statement- that’s what made it funny.

An equivalent for Trump would be to make a long statement about something he values and then follow it up with a crack that is the opposite.

Could take three meanings from what she said, and only one of them is racist:

A) She's saying politicians all look the same
B) She's accusing the interviewer of thinking all black people look alike in a joking, offhand manner
C) She's actually saying all black people look the same

I don't even like Clinton, but I highly doubt her meaning was C, regardless of what her personal views are. My guess is B, she was making a joke about the interviewer's flub.

Imagine if Laura Ingram or Ann Coulter said that. This board, Twitter and CNN would go apeshit.

That’s because of all their past statements...it would be clear that they were not speaking ironically but meant what they said.
