I live in the Country and only can get Dial up internet service, so I was thinking of getting Satellite Internet, does anyone out there have it? Do you recommend it or not? I've heard both Good and Bad things about it, and it's fairly expensive so I thought I would get some Trustworthy Terbite advice.LOL

I have a few users in my company on satellite internet. The service is OK. it's not as fast as Sympatico or Rogers, but it's certainly faster the dial up. From a price perspective it's more expensive relative to the speed you're getting but it's not out of reach either. i think my guys are on plans that are much less than $100 per month. ($60 per month sounds about right but i don't recall exactly.)

I think installation was around $800 but that's just a one-time fee. Other than that, I wouldn't hesitate to get satellite internet if your only other choice is dial up.

Thanks thirdtime, do you have this service? I've sent them an email to see if they service my area and to get some more info.

No, I'm on Rogers Extreme. I had a buddy move an hour north-east of Toronto going nuts as he's used to hi-speed and had to go to dial up as hi-speed wasn't available in his area. He just found out about the wireless and he's checking into if they service his area.
I think it requires an outdoor pie-plate size antenna on a tower.

wireless is fantastic if you can get it..satellite sucks..too slow and way too expensive..I have both and would like to dump the satellite
and find another alternative.

Inquire about Portable (Wireless) Internet from Rogers/Telus/Bell.

I've never tried it, but Look Communications has wireless Internet. www.look.ca

I think that the site allows you to find out if you're in an area that they can provide Wireless DSL to you.

Another option is to talk to the farmers in your area. They've gotten so high into the tech world it's not funny. They need high speed to transfer all their data on the fields/fertilizer etc.

I did some work out in Essex and the tower site I was at was loaded full of these antennas to supplement the farmers.

Several municipalities also have this operating in their systems, maybe you can hack into their systems.

It's resold by Rogers and Bell on infrastructure built by Inukshuk Wireless. http://inukshuk.ca/anglais/offre.html

I've had the opportunity to use it through Rogers in Ottawa, and it worked pretty well (a little bit of fade-out on the hottest of summer days, but otherwise it was fine). You buy the modem outright (about the size of a small book) and pay the monthly access fee, and put it somewhere where it can find the strongest signal (assuming there's a signal to be found). Then plug it in to your system just as you would a cable modem or a DSL modem.
