I am thinking about making the great leap from dial up modem to high speed internet access. I've heard various stories about poor quality service/down time from Rogers and also that high speed from Sympatico is often not-so-fast at peak times. Micro wave service with Look Communications seems like a good way to go as I can get a package for high speed and also television, but the disadvantage seems to be upfront installation charges. Right now, I am leaning towards Look as I think I can get a high speed and tv package for $50 a month, which is about what I am paying now for cable tv and dial up access now. The current cable package I have with Rogers is called "Ultimate" but it isn't very good, and some of the channels have shadow images and/or poor quality images.

I'd be interested in other peoples' experiences with Look, Rogers and Sympatico. Which way is best?

I use Symatico. It's crap. It has a download cap at 5.0GB. This is way too low for my needs. I'd go with Rogers if I were you.

Was Sympatico, Now Rogers at Home

I was on sympatico high speed for over a few years and have recently switched to Rogers.

I can tell you that I had no major problems with sympatico, but the installation of their service is a little cumbersome, phone filters, installation CDs, etc...Plus, there is no way I am gonna pay extra for going over their download limit.

Since moving to Rogers, I have nothing but high praise for their service. I was initially hesitant due to some bad press, but I think they over-come most of the problems.

I found Rogers quite faster. They seem to have the installation down pat. Just one advice, do not pay for the full installation, the basic one will do. Once the cable guy come and install your cable and modem and made sure there is no static interfence, all you have to do is click on your Internet brower and you're in cyber-heaven. Awesome. :)

Thanks all for your excellent advise. I didn't realize their was a bit of a security issue with Rogers. Well, CSIS is probably already monitoring my email and web habits. lol What is becoming clear is that it is not very clear at all. With Sympatico, speed diminishes with distance, but with Rogers speed diminishes with # of users. hhmmm...and nobody commented on Look. I guess they are the new guy on the block, relatively speaking. Well, from the sounds of it, a lot of the technical difficulties that I had heard about have been solved, although perhaps Rogers still goes off line from time to time still.

Thanks again.

Since few months ago, Sympatico changed their way to calculate the bandwidth usage. It is 10GB upload & download.
Ususally people don't have much upload unless you are running a web server or allow your friends downloading stuff from your machine.

There is no "best" isp. It's all a matter if you get lucky or not. I have Rogers and am very happy with it; yet I know some people who think it's crap. The same goes with Sympatico. My brother-in-law swears by it but a fellow worker has had nothing but problems.

What I suggest you do is ask a few of your neighbours what they have and whether they're happy with it. Also, if you decide on Sympatico, make sure it's available in your area. I live in Markham and surprisingly it isn't in my neighbourhood.
