A group of former sex trade workers asking why men should be allowed to buy sex from prostitutes gathered at a downtown court house to mark International Day of No Prostitution on Tuesday....

this is bullshit or publicity stunt....
“I suffered for 17 years at the hands of men,” said MacLeod.

what stop you to start job at tim horton or ware house or any mall or like millions of other jobs which other women are doing. After sucking 17 yrs now you are saying this. I can't understand this. give me a break..
If you were slave of pimp then I am sure you will be many times in 17 yrs when you can report to polics but you did not. You could not dial 911 in 17 yrs? You were not living in thrid world country, you were in Canada.

You can make the same argument about drug dealers, organized criminals, etc. In other words, it's not an argument. We all have the CHOICE to either do the right thing or give into our temporal needs.
Shit, I worked in construction for 2 Summers while paying my way through university. I hated every minute of it. It was backbreaking (literally) work but the pay was good.

It is also was not safe work (construction). I saw many injuries and 2 deaths on the job. Maybe the politicians should make construction work illegal too.

"Prostitution isn’t a choice it is a lack of choice for poor and less educated women. They deal with issues that force them into prostitution. We need to call on the government to stand up for women’s equality,” Baptie said.
I think it is true for many sex workers, that they are poor, less educated and deal with issues that force them into prostitution. But the solution isn't to make it illegal, that makes their lives even worse. Worse if they stay in sex work, because now they are in more danger, and worse if they leave sex work, because now they are down to an even worse option. Only an idiot would think that preventing someone from doing something results in them doing something they consider better. If they considered it better, they would be doing it already.

The solution to people doing sex work that hate it is not to make it even more horrible (by making it illegal). The solution is to improve society so their other options are better. But since people who want to ban sex work typically do not care about sex workers, that is an option that they are not interested in.

On the other hand, there are the Gens, Miss Maya Blues, Beckys, etc. who are intelligent, educated and outspoken. Who would deny them their right to choose this profession for as long as they desire?

As I stated before in another thread, the only way to "fix" prostitution is to put the control of the trade IN the hands of the women. What that means is the women makes the final decision on who she allows as a client, under what circumstances & is controlled by no one. The problem with modern day prostitition is we've all been galvanized and drawn lines in the sand. People see a "pimp" as some dude in a big hat much like you'd see in a Ice Cube video. A dude that controls women by punishing them in the back of a white van for not hitting quota. That's a stereotype. A "pimp" is any person (male or female) that controls the free choices of a SP (male or female). Does the SP working at the MP have choice on the clients she has to see? No. You take whatever clients come in, that's how the game goes. The reality is the SW has MORE choice on her clients if she's got no pimp than a woman working in a micro/MP. At least on the street you can say no way, I'm not getting in the fucking car. This industry needs to move forward where there is NO control over the SP's unless it's entirely legitimate. What's that mean? It means the SP HIRES and controls someone to answer the phone for her, update her website, answer her emails. She sets the rates, she finds security, she controls everything.

As for the argument about it's a "lack of choice" for women. The world of prostitution has many types of women in it. Everything from broken angry runaways to women that just love sex & the variety working in this trade brings. Is the choice always theres? Easy to say that as a male, isn't it, but if you've got 2 kids and the old man has fucked off well...how do you feed your kids? How many SP's are single moms looking to pay the bills? The sex trade offers flexibility for women who NEED that money. It's so easy to sit as some armchair quarterback and say "well you shouldn't have made this choice"...but that's entirely condescending. Look around your neighborhood at the homeless people. Almost ALL of them are males. Why? Because WOMEN can sell their bodies to eat. Homeless people dig in the fucking dumpster. Once you're in the trade, getting the fuck out is hard. It's an ugly vicious circle. When some 28 year old walks in your office with a resume that has "no previous job experience" for 6 years, are you going to hire her? Not like she can say "I sucked dicks for 6 years" in the qualifications section of a resume. So what choice did that woman who worked in a MP for 17 years have man? If she came to you tomorrow and said I need a job, would you hire her? Probably not.

Too many "pooners" view SP's not much different than the rest of society does. They take no time or effort to understand what they go thru. Maybe you should start. And FYI, I'm not some angry, church going guy that hates the sex trade...my GF is an escort. Just her job doesn't define her..as mine doesn't define me. I'd like the rest of the world to see it that way too.

My thoughts exactly.

Thank you for posting this. Very insightful, empathetic & kind. If only there were more like you so all of us girls could have a loving relationship AND a job we love. :)

Your place!!
I'm sure there are many Ladies who are forced into the business by pimps, but I'm sure there are a lot of Ladies who are there by their own choice because the money is good and as I've been told "easy"! Where else can any lady regardless of age (legal age) or education make 150 to 200 plus dollars an hour? Where there is a market there is a supply, simple.
