There are spaces available for an eastern Ontario expansion team for Conferences C and D. Hamilton may get their team in the future.

Hamilton, is a small market and doesn't deserve a team. Toronto should have a second team; they would automatically be the 3rd richest team in the league.

Another Toronto team would separate Canada..lol Let's play it safe and plug in Hamilton and Quebec.

I was wondering about this. A new team in the GTA, should it happen, may take away from the Leafs and vault the New York Rangers into the number one postion in market value. Bettman must be drooling.

The fact that there are 30 teams in a league without relegation is absolutely absurd.

What a farce this is. No wonder it can't be taken seriously.

You're so right, no one takes the NFL(32), NBA(30), or MLB(2 x 15=30) seriously either.

Expansion? There's several teams that are losing money. If anything the league needs to shrink.

You're absolutely correct about the NFL: An elaborate, derivative of Poor man's Rugby that has no appeal outside of the cities in two North American countries. Purely created for propaganda purposes since the U.S.A. needed to invent a sport in order to proclaim superiority in anything. Sure they're the 'best' at it; they're the ONLY ones at it.

The NBA has a strong following in Europe. One of my favorite players left the L.A. Lakers and returned to his home country to play. Spain and Greece particularly follow it. Basketball is very popular in China as well. Truly international.

Baseball is huge. Leagues in the Caribbean, South America and Asia. The WBC is a great deal of fun to watch since it's a truly global competition. I'm sure a great deal of those players have a favorite team in either the National or American league and strive to eventually play there.

The original post however is about the NHL. A sub-standard league that promotes thuggery, assault and mediocrity whilst attempting to force itself into markets where it's neither wanted or noticed. This is not a comment upon the actual sport of hockey. It's a factual account upon a league that is clearly in decline/decay and is erroneously doing everything possible to do damage control even if it's at the destructive cost of the very sport it administrates and promotes.

Relegation is still an absolute must for all these leagues in order to maintain only the deserving teams within the top tier.

The playoff format is good for economy/business because we are moving back to the old system were below average teams could make the playoffs. The 1st seed plays the 4th seed and the 2nd seed plays the 3rd seed within the each Conference. The Conferences will be called 'Patrick, Norris, Adams, Smythe'. This would be great in keeping the hockey tradition and maybe change Gary Bettman's name to ???? ???.
