I don't have Vista but if you can figure out which unknown or uninvited program is consuming your resources, you can click it off by running MSConfig from the Start Menu (go to run, then type in MSConfig to access the list of programs that start-up).
In the past, sometimes that doesn't work so you would need to also remove the executable line from your registry (but don't do that if you don't know what you're doing).
