I need some quick help.

I want to visit Manhattan, but don't want to stay in Manhattan as it will cost me an arm and a leg.
I'm not sure of outside areas and what places are safe and don't want to lose and arm and a leg walking to the subway in a bad area of town.

Can anyone recommend a decent MOTEL near Manhattan (Preferably a short train/subway ride away). I was looking in Newark NJ, Elizabeth NJ & Harrison NJ, but I don't even know those areas to well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To the Big Apple

go to www.travelerdiscountguide.com for coupons to motels/hotels in & near NYC/NJ.

In NYC, Comfort Inn, on 35th st, Holiday Inn and 3 other chain hotels for $95 - $115. Depending on season, sometime last min rooms for $75 USD in '3 stars'.

Or La Quinta www.laquinta.com near Time square $100 USD. Many large chain hotels have promotional weekend rates.

Within city, except for ritz type hotels, otherwise beaten-up in terms of age or hotel traffic, noise, oh deduct 0.5 to 1 star from stated rating.

www.hoteldiscount.com has some last min bargains.

Flushing, Queens, and Brooklyn are mostly safe if you don't venture too far from MTA, some neighborhood may be noisey if next to 24hr diner or MTA station.

Newark & Harrison can be busy/noise next to the airport.

Many motels/hotels in Secaucus, Rutherford, Bergen have shuttles to/from
city. If not to city, can take shuttle to airport and take the blue bus?/Grey line into NYC for $15-25 USD, depending JFK, LGA, Newark, if you're not in a hurry. MTA goes to JFK & LGA.

NYC can be done without breaking the bank, as long as you hunt for bargains and search.

Enjoy the city that never sleeps.

Anywhere but here
Holiday Inn of Hasbrouck Heights
(201) 288-9600
283 State RT 17
Hasbrouck Heights, NJ 07604

I used to stay at this place at least 2 nights a week for 3 years and it is cheap and close to the GW bridge. Call them as I think they can arrange transport into NYC.

Here and there
If you have wheels (say, a rental car), there are some relatively decent-priced chain h(m)otels a couple of km's south of the Meadowlands sports complex across the Hudson in Jersey. Midtown Manhattan via tunnel is about 15 minutes away. Then you can park the car and take the subway all over NYC...

I stayed at The Hotel Chandler. It's reasonable for being kitty corner to Empire State building. Great little hotle with sweet sweet asians walking around. (Not workers)

Smack dab in heart of K-town 35th street. Got to go back for some late night dessert ;)

Didn't come across many NYC hotties until my last few visits. Things have improve in Manhattan lately...

Wow... Thanks for all the help everyone.
I've just printed all of the thread and I'm going to start calling them in the morning.

I was looking for an Okay motel/hotel that isn't going to brake the bank.
I definitely want a private washroom and no roaches under the bed :)
I've drove in NJ & NY in the past and came across some bad areas of town. I don't recall the area names and just want to make sure I don't end up booking a motel in the wrong area.

Thanks again.

Enjoy

Mahattan has really clean-up a lot in last 7 years. More cops than tourist per capita.

I always enjoy sharpen up my offensive driving skills while in NYC. Especially merging into Holland tunnel. Driving on FDR in large vehicle going full speed, reminds me of Monte Carlo.

Manhattan actually has many low-end budget hotels, full of international travellers. Lots of these places are on the upper West Side, which is a fun part of town. But room rates are still going to be in the $125-$200US range, and they book up weeks in advance. Then remember to add whatever the current rates of taxes and surcharges is: probably about 20%. Moreover, it is a safe bet that the room will be miniscule, without natural light, and facing a brick wall of the back of an opposing building.

A terrific city, but claustrophobic and annoyingly pricey. OTH, you can eat at zillions of Manhattan eateries for reasonable money. And taxis are not expensive.

If you stay outside Manhattan, my advice is to use public transit or commuter trains to get in and out. Parking garages are hideously expensive. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but the daily Manhattan rate with taxes is now, I believe, in the $30-$40US range (unless you are on the extreme fringe of Manhattan). For that kind of money, you might as well stay at a hotel in Manhattan, and skip commuting. Or else keep within subway distance and stay in one of the other boroughs.

For > $125 USD, imo, better deal around 53th to 55th street near Queensboro bridge. Those 3 & 3.5 stars go for $120 USD with private bath. Booked it via www.hoteldiscount.com

The parking rate depends on neighborhood. Lots of free street parking in Upper East side and take the 6 train to lower Mahattan. Otherwise, parking generally cheaper more uptown.

Around wall street, yes, $30 - $45 are the norm. While some lots on outside of Chinatown for $25 - $30.
