my read is that forrester got everything backwards. telling them not to support macs was nuts. as he said, IT people love standardization. macs have always been a very restricted piece of computing hardware/software. there's almost no home industry making utilities for them. IT should have embraced macs. PCs with their free-for-all ability to install anything have been a nightmare. if the cloud thing really takes off and IT can assume wi-fi everywhere, look for the thin client to make a triumphant return.
i understand the status thing, paying more for less has always been the way to show you're rich. disposable income and all. i'm not rich. i have to get value for my money. and i like flexibility. no mac in my future. on the other hand, i do like the ipod/iphone/ipad for walkaround usage. they have so little capability and the sandbox makes me immune to virii. for that, they are excellent. (jailbroke is a requirement for me of course)
when i see a mac, i know it's being used by a computer illiterate person. (OK. ok. there are exceptions. not many)
