This exactly matches what is going on at our firm, the power knowledge staff has purchased their own Macs and the IT org is supporting them... At the internal meetings I attend it's getting close to 50% macs on the conference room table vs the free windows box. Internal and external there are multiple iPads in every large meeting now... enterprise apps companies are creating iPad versions of their apps - 90% of F100 support or are evaluating iPads....

With Lion, iOS 5 and iCloud the synching of contacts is easier among mobile devices than it is with the corporate servers...

my read is that forrester got everything backwards. telling them not to support macs was nuts. as he said, IT people love standardization. macs have always been a very restricted piece of computing hardware/software. there's almost no home industry making utilities for them. IT should have embraced macs. PCs with their free-for-all ability to install anything have been a nightmare. if the cloud thing really takes off and IT can assume wi-fi everywhere, look for the thin client to make a triumphant return.

i understand the status thing, paying more for less has always been the way to show you're rich. disposable income and all. i'm not rich. i have to get value for my money. and i like flexibility. no mac in my future. on the other hand, i do like the ipod/iphone/ipad for walkaround usage. they have so little capability and the sandbox makes me immune to virii. for that, they are excellent. (jailbroke is a requirement for me of course)

when i see a mac, i know it's being used by a computer illiterate person. (OK. ok. there are exceptions. not many)

Sooooooo very true!
I have a Republican friend at work who has used PCs >10 yrs and still uses IE because he doesn't even know how to download and install another browser! He has gone through 4 laptops so far. He don't know how to run AV, or malware scans and defrag his PCs. Had to d/l and install CCleaner for him because he didn't have a clue how to do this! He runs them till they fark up and slow down or get high-jacked then either pays someone ~$100 to clean them up. Or he just buys a new laptop! He's a very computer illiterate person! Offered to teach him Linux but he says he don't want to be bothered learning something different because Windows is too much for him to handle.

Now he's thinking of getting a Mac because a Mac guy told him they don't get viruses and such, because they are made better and cost more. Told him Linux does all that and it's free but being a GOPer he says if it's free it must be more insecure than M$.....Some GOPers think this way......FFS!

Now he's looking at a farking Mac laptop costing >$1200, when a new Toshiba laptop better than my >3 yr old Toshiba laptop only costs $300 down here!....
