i am looking into buying a new TV, does anyone have an opinion on whether HDTV is worth the money and will it last or will it go the way of the large laser discs that went into oblivion and are now replaced by DVD??

Yes it is woth the money. The FCC in the US and the CRTC are making it mandatory that all TVs be digital / HDTV by 2007. The plan is to have all anolog signals to be turned off shortly there after making any non-digital/HDTV ready TV obsolete. If you by a TV that cannot support an external digital or HDTV decoder it will be useless in about 6-8 years.

HDTV's are the way to go. If you have a DVD player then once you watch a DVD with awesome special effects or digital animation you will definitely notice the difference - outstanding. But unless you get a High Definition Digital Decoder Box from Rogers you will not enjoy the high definition capabilities of the TV when you watch regular programming. I think its only a few bucks more a month then a regular Digital Decoder box for the same packages.

I think he means use the component hookups instead of RCA or S-video. Using the component gives you a much brighter & clearer picture, particularly if you have a progressive scan dvd player.

As for HDTV, keep in mind that prices will fall just like any other piece of technology. When you buy one is really a matter of personal choice right now. But rest assured, if you watch TV, you will eventually have to buy an HDTV.

YOU ARE DEAD ON RIGHT

the governments will then sell the analog signals off on a user basis

long range budgets are already inluding this revenue so HDTV is here to stay

A DVD player, and a TV like a Sony Vega, is all you need. I can't see you getting a better picture than that. The scan rate on HDTV is higher, but probably not that noticeable compared to the aformentioned.

Sony's entire television model lineup from the low to high end are called Wegas, and yes with HDTV you will notice a difference. Also, the quality of your component cables will make a difference as well as having power regulators.

I've seen people go to Future Shop, buy any Sony tv they saw, some random DVD player (which likely only comes with composite cables) and think they were going to enjoy the best picture quality available on the market.
