I was at a friends place this week and she tells me that one of her cats disappeared for three days and then returned, which is unusual for this cat. He was not hungry, so he had something to eat. He has stayed pretty close to home since his return. I suspect someone pulled him into a house and kept him prisoner for three days and only let him out because they could not stand his howling. I have seen this sort of thing before. Years back, I knew a cat that disappeared for 8 months and then returned. This cat was pretty traumatised and would not leave the basement for 3 months.

Any other mysterious pet disappearance stories?

My first cat always went out in the afternoon and came back after a few hours but one day he didn't come back; still think about him from time to time. I wish I knew what happened.

Some cats are adventurous intruders. If you are living in a house with
cats roaming in the neighborhood chance is they will be
sneaking into your residence. Over the years
I've played host to several uninvited feline vistors.
One of them might be stray, the others probably were
just taking a break away from their owners. They didn't mind
staying with me for short while after I treated them to a good
meal and having a cozy bed to sleep on. I still remember the
stray cat fondly. I was living in a students' rooming house where
the entrance was often left open. Out of nowhere she show up
outside my room purring. Once I caught sight of her she immediately
played tricks like rolling on the floor. She knew how to communicate
to me the wants for a meal. These cats are lucky to run into
a kind host. Better keep them from running around freely. The
experience of ending up into some weirdo's house could
be traumatic.

I know some people that had a cat that would go away a few days at a time and when he re-appeared he was well fed and in good shape. They suspect that this cat probably has a second home to go to. He was sort of a feline bigamist.
