It's an already established fact that when the pope was a cardinal he ordered all bishops to conceal accusations of child abuse until 10 years after the victim reached adulthood. He's been well aware of child rape by priests for a long time and everyone that chose him pope knew his opinion on the topic was shut the kids up and avoid prosecutions. The only question is why anyone would still be a roman catholic since most of this has been known for a while (other then this specific case where he had more specific knowledge.)

The Church is fighting back and claiming this is all a huge smear conspiracy to discredit them!
Now they are starting to talk just like Republicans. Maybe next they will hire Karl Rove to handle this!....

Radzinger reminds me of Richard Nixon. He looks like such a double dealing shifty rat.

Radzinger was in charge of the Vatican disciplinary division ie "Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith" and he had a reputation as a control freak who micro managed all the pedophile priest cases he had to deal with.

Now that all the heat is on him he's invoking the Sargeant Schultz defence. He saw nothing and he knows nothing.
The guy should be charged with obstructing justice and do time in the crowbar hotel for all his coverup activities.

It's ironic that god's top representative on earth has covered up the evil acts of his messengers. The line the between good and evil are further blurred. Time to give up all religion.

This seems to be a common failing for conservatives of all stripes be they religious or non religious....

You mean for factory defects and such? It wouldn't matter. They'd just tinker with him a little bit, send him back, and tell everybody he's fixed.

So what else is new?

The Catholic Church has been abusing children for over 500 years. Change is glacially slow, they stopped kidnapping children only at the end of WW II. It will be another 500 years before the Catholic Church realizes that humans are incapable of celibacy.

The Associated Press

Church and Vatican documents showed that in the mid-1990s, two Wisconsin bishops urged the Vatican office led by Ratzinger to let them hold a church trial against Murphy.

However, Ratzinger's deputy at the time decided the alleged molestation occurred too long ago* and said Murphy - then ailing and elderly - should instead repent and be restricted from celebrating Mass outside of his diocese, according to the documents.
There are a number of disagreements I have with Roman Catholic Theology. However, fair is fair:

Where is the evidence that Benedict XVI personally tried to cover this up?

In many jurisdictions today, and not that long ago in every jurisdiction in North America the *statute of limitations tolls on such charges. Does that mean that if the Crown does not prosecute because too great a time has passed, that they are trying to cover up child molestation?

I would look at what the Vatican is doing now.

Penn and Teller's show Bullshit did a great breakdown on all the sick things the Vatican has done and is still doing too this day. The bit on protecting child rapists starts at about the 3 minute mark of this video. Because of Ratzinger exposing child raping priests is violating a rule punished by excomunication (meaning you go too hell.) But legally in the States it is all academic because Bush gave the pope immunity for all past sex abuse coverups in 2005.

Under what power did he do that?

The President can pardon Federal offenses he cannot pardon state offenses (only the Governor of that State can do that)
