You know what - I'm not a fan of the Conservative government in any way, but really - who cares that a former aide's date has a criminal past, and was brought to a non-government social event? They confirmed she was there. They confirmed they talked - but no business was transacted. I'm sure that if business were to be transacted a proper security check would have to be done.

It was only a big deal because Carson, ex-PMO, was trying to land lucrative gov't contracts. Barred lawyer, influence peddling and had his ex-escort wife on contracts he was trying to push. That makes it relevant that she had met Harper.

If only Harper was as painstaking with the PMO as he was with people trying to show up to his rallies....

4tees is correct about this. It doesn't matter a Tinker's Dam that the P.M. and Miss McPherson discussed the weather or kayaking or dogs.
I truly doubt that at a reception they discussed purchasing ships or tanks or computers or whatever.

Firstly, it is not a leftist opr rightist attitude. It is a sensible and productive attitude. And I completely agree with you that it should not be held against someone that she has been an SP, especially and particularly not here.

But to me the point is this - to what extent should Stephen Harper be held accountable

Harper should be held 100% accountable for mismanagement by his government. That he knew nothing about the theft, patronage, and graft is a criticism of his poor leadership and lack of management oversight. His poor judgement in choosing untrustworthy ministers, his failure to have aides properly screened, his failure to oversee them properly, his inability to keep tabs on what they're doing--these are all criticisms ultimately of Harper.

In the case of TCHC the CEO claimed she had no knowledge of the theft and graft either--but she still was fired.

There is nowhere else for the buck to stop but with Harper.
